Three years ago, I had the privilege of facilitating a youth entrepreneurship workshop at Nevada Partners alongside Rico and Jenn from the Urban Chamber of Commerce.

Looking back at this photo reminds me why I do this work.

Every student in this room had an idea, a dream, or untapped potential waiting to be developed. Our job wasn't just to teach business. It was to help young people see themselves as leaders, innovators, and future CEOs.

Fast forward to today, and that mission has only grown.

This summer, we're bringing Youth CEO Camp back with an even bigger vision. Students will learn how to develop a business idea, build a business plan, strengthen their leadership skills, and pitch with confidence.

The future doesn't happen by accident.

It happens when a community invests in its young people.

Most people lose the conversation before they ever say a word.

The strongest communicators aren't always the loudest.

They're the most observant.

Before you respond...
Before you persuade...
Before you lead...

Listen.

Every conversation provides clues about how the other person thinks, communicates, and makes decisions.

One of my favorite questions is incredibly simple:

"How was your weekend?"

I'm not asking because I need to know what they did.

I'm listening to how they answer.

Here's what I often hear:

🦅 Eagle
"It was good."

Short.
Direct.
Results focused.

🦜 Parrot
"It was amazing! We went here, met these people, then this happened..."

High energy.
Story driven.
Relationship oriented.

🕊️ Dove
"It was really meaningful. I loved spending time with family and seeing everyone together."

Emotion.
Connection.
People first.

🦉 Owl
"It was a great event. About 200 people attended, there were 20 vendors, and everything was well organized."

Facts.
Details.
Analysis.

None of these responses are better than the others.

They're simply different.

Great leaders don't expect everyone to communicate like they do.

They adapt.

Think of communication like boxing.

If you throw the first punch before understanding the person in front of you, you'll often miss.

Instead...

✔️ Observe.

✔️ Listen.

✔️ Let them reveal their communication style.

Then respond in a way that connects with them.

That's not manipulation.

That's emotional intelligence.

The best communicators don't force conversations.

They create understanding.
