The next hockey star?

"Pochiro is not the only current player in the WHL with roots in Las Vegas. Gage Quinney, who Pochiro says is a close friend, is a 19-year-old who was recently traded to the Kelowna Rockets by the Prince Albert Raiders. And forward Chris Francis played 292 games with the Portland Winterhawks between 2006 and 2010, then returned home and played four seasons with the Las Vegas Wranglers in the ECHL."

“It’s deeper than just hockey,” said Billy Johnson, who has spent 11 years promoting hockey as president of the Las Vegas Wranglers. “It’s about connecting with the community. It’s about going to schools, going to hospitals, going to service clubs and selling 365 days a year. It can’t just be ‘We’re the NHL’ open the doors and everyone’s going to show up. Not in this town.”

The NHL has given the go-ahead for billionaire businessman William Foley to gauge the appetite for the sport in Las Vegas. Be prepared to go deep into your piggy bank; the average ticket price for an NHL game was around $63 last season.
