My family and I recently had the opportunity to catch up with my weightlifting coach, John Callis, and his wife Cindy. John had a successful weightlifting career that culminated in him representing the US in international competition at the 1972 Veracruz Invitational and finishing 4th in the super heavyweight class at Nationals that same year. John’s best unofficial lifts were 410 lb press, 320 sn**ch, 420 C&J. He still holds the Virginia state record in the Press at 172.5 kgs (380 lbs)! The PRESS! Can you imagine cleaning these weights and then PRESSING them overhead? Amazing….
We had a great time catching up and trading old stories. Thanks for sharing your coaching, wisdom, and fun memories John. Training with you and the rest of our small club in that old garage was a blast.

✅Bre made 3/6 finishing with a 68 kgs sn**ch and 82 kgs C&J. Really proud of her comeback make on the 82. No new records were made at this one, but Bre currently holds all of the state records in her division (W35 64 kgs).
✅Jami made 4/6 finishing with a 77 kgs sn**ch and 97 kgs C&J. Jami took a gutsy shot at an 81 kgs PR attempt sn**ch she’s never attempted before and continues to improve her lifting. Great job Jami….you’ve got more to come!
✅Adam made 4/6 finishing with a 92 kgs sn**ch and 108 kgs C&J (went light on C&J due to injury). Adam wasn’t 100% for this one but showed up and showed a lot of heart.
✅Jean-Marc made his debut lifting for Las Cruces Weightlifting and absolutely crushed it. He made 6/6 and finished with huge PR’s - 115 kgs Sn**ch and 140 kgs C&J. Jean-Marc has been training with us for about four months and has plenty more in the tank.
