It’s okay if you don’t have it in you to do much, sometimes pushing yourself looks like baby steps. Embrace them 💜

Contrary to popular belief, you as a woman do not have to train like a man. That doesn’t mean you can’t lift heavy or do the same/similar exercises, it just means you have the option to give your body what it needs during each phase. The male hormonal cycle happens predictably every single day, while the female cycle comes with different phases over the course of approximately a month. There isn’t a single woman I’ve trained that didn’t mention energy levels and ability level shifting over the course of the month, and I wish I’d researched this topic sooner. These lock screens provided are just an example of the variety seen across the different phases. Feel free to do the workouts if they sound skill-level and ability appropriate. This is the routine I’m using as I regain my health after chronic health flares.
I used to be a gym rat and active martial artist, so slowing down like this feels challenging at times. These lock screens are daily reminders that I’m on the road back to the mat every single day 🔥

This is a little two piece combo I showed on the bag the other day but wanted to show what it looks like during live sparring. I start with the jab to get my partner to forget about his legs then follow up with a lead leg inside round kick. The kick is longer than the punch so even if he backs away I still have a good chance of landing it. You can drive it through to cause damage, use it to set up a follow up punch, kick, elbow, etc, or simply use it to score points.

Set up that overhand with a lead hook to the body first. You can either land the hook or fake it then follow through with the overhand. If you plan on landing the hook, try targeting the liver for maximum damage. Get your opponent to drop their hands and open themselves up for that overhand right.

Transitioning from the back to an armbar is one of my favorite things to do and can be very sneaky if you play it right. Sometimes you’ll find that your opponent is very good at defending the rear naked choke so you have to look for other options and have to have the ability to transition to different positions and submission types. In this clip, I wasn’t going to continue chasing the neck when the arm bar seemed like a better choice. And if your partner tries to stack into you, you can roll over your back shoulder into a belly down armbar and finish from there.

The jab is a very useful tool when it comes to understanding your distance and range, getting short, quick shots, and distracting your opponent from your real intention to throw power shots or anything else. In this case, the idea is to throw the jab to get the opponent to cover up their face, making them forget about leg kick defense, then stepping in and throwing that lead leg inside roundhouse kick. You can make the jab stiff and powerful, the inside kick powerful, both of them can be thrown with power, or both can be thrown as more of a snap to set something else up. There are so many different ways to use the same weapon and that’s what I love about this sport and its evolution.

Let’s talk about prevention, specifically, preventing your partner from getting to your back for a full back mount. In this clip my partner is on my side with one hook in already. I get to my knees anticipating him throwing his other hook in. So I time it, catch his foot to prevent him from inserting the hook, then push that foot behind my back causing him to roll to one side and allowing me to get into a top half guard position.
