In the spring of 2022, after getting fed up with “frankensteining” our cook systems to fit what we needed for backcountry hunts, we decided to build our own from the ground up.

4 years and a lot of dead prototypes later, we officially launched Roughridge Stove Co. and the Highcountry Cook system this past spring.

All we can say is, we’re just getting started.

In our years of testing in the field, there’s one thing that’s true about wind in the mountains: it’s always gusty. It shifts, it comes from all directions, and it rarely stays constant. We’ve all been there before. A big gust comes through and blows your flame out, and usually you don’t even know it until it’s too late.

That’s why we designed our windguard to hold a flame when the wind won’t hold still.

If you want to save the most fuel with our Highcountry Cook System, the trick is to not always run it on full blast. Adjust the flame to match the conditions you’re in. Here’s our rule of thumb:

High Wind = High Flame
Medium Wind = Medium Flame
Low Wind = Low Flame
