It’s throwback Thursday!
Let’s see a pic of one of your past Bucks, and the story of the hunt!
I’ll start.
11/11/21 Riley County Kansas-158
Had to drop wife off at airport so I was late getting in to the stand. Got settled in my climber at 10:45am.
I was set up on the edge of an old pasture, that rolled down into a narrow river bottom(about 60 yards wide). The other side of the river was some thick brush that lead up to a cut bean field.
About 11:15 saw a young buck come off the bean field, and head down into the brushy bottom, 5 ish minutes later a pretty decent buck followed the same path, and disappeared in the same brushy area. The next thing I know is these two bucks are hauling the mail back into the bean field, and being chased by a much larger buck. After he chased them a ways, he turned and marched straight back to where he came from.
On my side of the river there was a big d**e, so I couldn’t see the bottom on the other side, but I knew what was happening. I said to myself, he is guarding a doe down in that bottom. I decided to make a move.
I had a stiff NW wind with 30-40mph gusts at my face so I knew I could beat their nose and ears! I had two big Cottonwoods between me and the river. I climbed down, took my boots off, and slowly made my way to the first cottonwood. I waited for another gust of wind, and made my way to the second one that was right on the edge of the d**e. I noted a landmark of where I saw him last and it was directly behind this cottonwood on the other side.
Once I made it behind this tree, I drew my bow back before laying eyes on him just knowing he was still there with the suspected doe. I took two backward steps while at full draw, and there he was standing and panting at 30 steps. She was bedded down with her back to the river! Looking at him, and him at her.
I settled the pin, and let him have it. She got up slowly looked at me, and eased off. He dropped in his tracks! My arrow went through both shoulders, and he couldn’t get up. I put another arrow in him, and the rest is History.
Sometimes you have to make a move, this time paid off!
