One word in this quote stands out: privilege.

Charles reminds us that riding is not simply something we do. It is an opportunity entrusted to us by a remarkable animal.

Most of us spend years searching for the right answers for our horses. We seek better exercises, better equipment, and better solutions. Yet the greatest gift we can offer our horses is our own commitment to learning.

Classical dressage is built on understanding the horse: how he thinks, how he learns, how he moves, and how he responds to our aids. The more we understand the species, the better equipped we are to help the individual horse standing in front of us.

Our horses deserve riders who never stop learning.

Internal Rotation of the Femur with Anna & Oreo
Enjoy this Sneak Peek!

We often overlook the fact that a lot of problems can be caused by an ineffective leg - running through half-halts, heavy on the forehand, steering issues, straightness and balance, etc.

In this video, Anna and Oreo give us a very clear demonstration of why an internally rotated femur changes everything for the better. Not only does Anna’s overall position and effectiveness improve, but Oreo’s balance, self-carriage, and freedom of movement improve right along with her.

The full-length video will be available in Team Tate Academy on Monday, June 1, 2026.

There’s a moment in the ride when everything either starts to come together… or quietly falls apart.

Usually, it has nothing to do with the movement itself. It comes back to whether the rider is able to stay organized enough in their own body to give the horse a clear, consistent place to go.

When that stability is there, the horse can trust the contact, stay in the line of travel, and begin to develop real confidence in the work. Without it, even simple things can start to feel complicated.

It’s something I pay attention to every day, whether I’m at home or in the show ring, because the horse depends on that consistency more than anything else.

Having a helmet that feels secure and comfortable enough that it disappears once you’re riding is part of that for me. I’ve really enjoyed my KASK Helmets from Dressage Collections. They’ve become a reliable part of my everyday setup.

Laser Beams and the Sitting Trot with Suzie & Montana
Enjoy this Sneak Peek!

Sitting the trot can be hard. Not only is the horse moving forward, his back is bouncing up and down, and his torso is also swinging side to side with each stride.

We tend to focus on following the forward and up-and-down motions, but often miss that side-to-side swing. When that happens, the horse can feel like you’re blocking his movement, making sitting trot uncomfortable for both of you.

In this video, Suzie and Montana demonstrate how using your “laser beams” to turn your torso helps you truly sync with the horse’s movement, not only making it easier for the horse, but for you as well!

The complete video will be available in Team Tate Academy on Monday, May 25, 2026.

TEAM TATE DRESSAGE SALE HORSES

Have you ever wanted to buy a horse that wasn’t from a “sale’s” barn? That has been gradually developed through a program, loved by the owner, and just due to special circumstances, they are for sale? Well we have 3 great (very different) horses coming on the market.

OREO- a wonderful small (15’2) imported 7 yr old Lusitano who is showing 1st and 2 nd level, ready for a flying change. He has offered some Changes, but with people coming to try him, we decided to wait to teach him. He’s AA friendly, super sweet, and ready to find his new owner. Top quality gaits and character to match. Located with Anna Robinson in Wellington, Fl. 🥕5k starting with a 9.

OKKI- he’s my horse and I love him, so the right home is a must! He is too small for me, cuz he’s only 16 hands. Black with chrome (including the cutest belly spot!), imported, 7 yr old DHH, hilarious, charming, talented, and easy to manage! He’s barefoot with PERFECT feet. Showing 1 st level, but does a green change. He has a terrific canter! Priced to sell because I need to do some farm repairs, and fix my round pen after Helene. Please contact Tami for scheduling a visit. Located in Landrum, SC. 🥕5k starting with a 6.

COMING SOON on the market- a fabulous 3rd/4th level 10 yr old, super charming and FUN, 17 hands, chestnut gelding. Now this one IS my size, and I would buy him if I could- one of the favs of the barn. Due to family circumstances, he will be for sale towards the end of the summer. Stay tuned because you won’t want to miss this one.

We here at Team Tate Dressage pride ourselves on correct kind training, and always doing what’s best for the horses in our care. It is difficult for us to part with these guys, but we are dedicated to finding them their next partners. Please read the ad and contact the correct person: Oreo~Anna LOCATED IN WELLINGTON and Okki~ Tami LOCATED IN LANDRUM,SC. I will happily chat with you after you have seen them, or if you have more questions. But everyone asks me how I do what I do- I delegate 😂 and I don’t have the time to answer 100 more texts, because I get flooded daily anyway- and I don’t ride with my phone. Running the daily operations, my Online academy, and showing/clinics on the wknds doesn’t leave a lot of time to chat on the phone. So please reach out to the ladies and once you have decided he may be right for you, I’m happy to chat. Thank you for your consideration 💕

I think many riders feel as though there are two different tracks: one that exists at home in the day-to-day training, and another that appears when you enter the show ring. It can feel as though those two things ask something different of both horse and rider.

But when the training goals are clear, there shouldn’t be a need to separate them. The same principles that guide the work at home - clarity, patience, straightness, and an understanding of how the horse develops - are the ones that should carry through everywhere.

For some riders, that path naturally includes showing, and for others it doesn’t, but that choice doesn’t change the purpose of the work itself. The focus remains on developing the horse in a way that builds strength, confidence, and understanding over time, rather than chasing a particular moment or outcome.

When you stay anchored in that, the work becomes much more consistent, and the horse benefits from that consistency above all else.

Over the years, I’ve found that riders often move through the levels by focusing on what is new at each stage, which is understandable, because those are the pieces that stand out the most.

But the more you work with horses over time, the more you realize that each level is really about what has already been developed, not just what is being introduced.

The movements themselves are only part of the picture. What matters more is whether the horse has the balance, straightness, and strength to perform them in a way that is sustainable and makes sense to the horse.

Showing can bring that into focus very quickly. It has a way of highlighting whether those underlying qualities are truly in place or still in progress.

When you understand the levels from that perspective, it changes how you approach both your training and your time in the ring. You start to see the tests less as something to get through and more as a reflection of the work you’ve done leading up to that moment.

That’s the approach I take in the Levels Series inside the Academy, breaking down what each level is meant to demonstrate so you can build the horse in a way that carries forward from one stage to the next.
