Be aware of where your body is really telling the horse.

As we ride a turn, circle or lateral movement, our torso and head should turn in the direction of travel - with the amount of rotation depending on the amount of bend. That naturally influences our weight and helps make the aid clearer to the horse.

If we’re tracking right while our torso, eyes or weight are not, we can unintentionally create conflicting and confusing aids.

So when something isn’t happening the way you’d hoped, stop and check yourself first. Part of being a good rider is good body awareness and making sure all of our aids are saying the same thing.

JJ rides in KASK helmets from Dressage Connections. Team Tate Academy members receive 10% off KASK helmets with code JJ10 - because good equipment should support the rider while the rider focuses on communicating clearly with the horse.

Using the Warm-Up to Choose the Day's Work with Finch
Enjoy this Sneak Peek!

Some rides begin with a plan. Others begin with a question: What is happening today, what isn’t happening, and what needs to change?

In this lesson, JJ walks us through her thought process as she assesses soundness, rhythm, relaxation, crookedness, connection, and the quality of the responses she’s getting. Rather than chasing the obvious problem, she looks for where it really begins - because often the issue that shows up is coming from somewhere else entirely.

The complete video will be available in Team Tate Academy on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Part of good training is recognizing where the problem really starts.

For example, if your horse gets quick and heavy in the canter and begins blowing through your half halts, trying to push a bigger half halt through in the canter isn’t going to fix it.

Go back to the walk and trot. Use exercises that help your horse understand and respond to the half halt when he can still stay balanced and organized. Then take that improved response back into the canter.

Don’t fight the problem. Give the horse an exercise that teaches him the answer.

Helping the Horse that Shortens the Neck
Enjoy this sneak peek!

A horse that feels behind the leg isn’t always lacking power - sometimes that power is blocked by a short, retracted neck and a stiff back.

In this video, JJ works with Rojo to show how correct bend, spinal alignment, and the rider’s seat teach the horse to seek the bit, lengthen the neck and connect from hocks to bridle.

TTA members can watch the complete video and learn the technique step by step. Start your 7-day free trial and explore more than 350 training videos in the Team Tate Academy. https://www.teamtateacademy.com/info

Developing Supple Ankles with montana
Enjoy this Sneak Peek!

Our ankles play an important role in how we communicate with the horse, yet they’re something we rarely think about. Stiff ankles can affect the entire leg and even be mirrored by stiffness in the horse’s hocks.

This week, JJ and Montana show us how a problem that appears elsewhere, such as the knee creeping over the knee roll in sitting trot, can actually originate in the ankle. In this video, JJ shares simple movements to improve strength and suppleness.
