Several days ago we posted a video of the "Rise" at Sinks Canyon State Park. Here, in this short group of videos and photos, is the "Sinks" - where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River flows into a cave on the south wall of the canyon and disappears. 1/4 mile downstream, the stream reappears on the north wall of the canyon. Enjoy!

Crowheart Butte - a prominent location in the Upper Wind River Valley is a cultural masterpiece of Wyoming and the local Native American population. This is where WROC proudly calls this "home". This dry, featureless butte has stood guard over the Upper Wind River Valley, just east of Dubois, WY for millenia. Located between the Wind River Range to the South and the Absaroka/Owl Creeks to the North, this valley has been home to man and wildlife alike for tens of thousands of years due to mild winter conditions and plentiful resources. However, more recently, this location played host to one of NW Wyoming's most significant historical tribal battles where in the mid 1800s Chief Washakie of the Shoshone Tribe defeated his enemy - Chief Big Robber of the Crow Tribe - in hand to hand combat and settled a long standing battle for the riches of the valley and area surrounding it. Particularly, this battle gave the Shoshone Tribe hunting rights to the area in NW Fremont County, WY - which was rich with ungulates and natural resources.

As stated before, WROC is proud to call this area of Wyoming home. The history, wildlife and scenery of the Upper Wind River Valley and surrounding mountain ranges are spectacular and we truly are blessed to live, play and work in such a magnificent area.

It’s enough to give any fly angler weak knees, sweaty palms, and a stutter. Picture absolute monsters—trout stretching well over 30 inches and tipping the scales north of 20 pounds—swimming around without a care in the world. You'll find this magnificent sight at Sinks Canyon State Park near Lander, Wyoming, the intergalactic home of Wind River Outdoor Company.

Before you get too excited, fishing isn't allowed in this stretch of the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River! Known as the "Rise," this protected pool/stretch of river is teeming with large brown, brook, and predominantly rainbow trout. It’s the breathtaking spot where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River re-emerges from the canyon wall, a quarter-mile after vanishing into a cave across the valley known as the "Sinks". The most mind-blowing part? It takes that rushing water between two and four hours to navigate that short underground distance from the "Sinks" to the "Rise" - really bringing that vast network of caves into appreciation.

It never gets old! This stretch of road from Dubois to Moran Junction has somewhat of a cult following and for good reason - the views are spectacular! The Grand Teton rising from valley floor into the clear blue Wyoming skies is pretty awesome. WROC is especially lucky as this is our neck of the woods and we know all about Western Wyoming - hiking, camping, fly fish and hunting. This summer has been hot and dry - I think we all know that BUT the last week has been a change - almost like fall is here! With temps in the low 70s, some rain and little of the big "W", the conditions have improved a lot in the area and NOW is the time to finish off summer right with those trips into the Winds chasing Cutthroats and Golden Trout! That trip would also be a great time to test those legs out because archery season starts in less than two weeks! Get out there and enjoy all that Wyoming has!

Fire season in west-central Wyoming is here and we got a good taste of it last night in the place we call home. Please..... if you venture into the hills and mountains, be smart and diligent. Let's not create a situation where our wildlands burn more than absolutely necessary. Stay safe, stay vigilant and if needed, please just stay home until conditions improve.

For context, those flames are 20 to 30 feet tall and it took less than a minute to engulf that entire mountainside. There is no human alive that would outrun that fire and be able to handle the heat being generated from the fire.
