What would you say if upon learning of your chronic lower back pain, I wrote you a prescription to help alleviate the pain? Only you can't have this prescription filled by any pharmacist or drug company. Actually this prescription has nothing to do with medication at all. What if the prescription simply read "MOVEMENT?"

Every day I meet with people in all avenues of my career as a health care provider, most of whom suffer from the same chief complaint, back pain. Back pain can be extremely debilitating, and affects many aspects of normal everyday life. While it's easy to know that our backs in fact are in pain, what we fail to explore is the real reasons as to why. What have we been doing that has negatively affected our postural integrity of the way we walk, run, sit, and sleep? We are quick to find solutions to our pain in anti-inflammatory medication and other medications seeking to mask and manage pain. And while pain management is an important factor in helping the human body to recover and heal, correcting the way in which our body physically works and focusing on how efficently one's body works is the only way to promote long term physical, functional health and wellness. Therefore, the prescription is simple. Having aches and pains? Get MOVING!!!

Due to the adaptive nature of the body, it is important to change your training regimen to ensure consistent progressions and most importantly injury prevention. F.I.T.T. is an acronym which stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type. If you keep these four training components in mind during your program, it will aid in the progress of achieving your goals and significantly lower your risk for injury as well.

Moral of the story, get F**T.

Hip tightness is the root of many common physical ailments such as lower back pain, knee pain, as well as deficiencies in our movement patterns as the hips are at the center of most movements in daily life. From walking to squatting, our hips are the driving force behind efficient functional movement.

Foam rolling (Self Myofascial Release or SMR), and a handful of hip focused static stretches, in theory are great in terms of placing focus on increasing the range of motion in those muscle groups specifically related to hip ROM. However many of us find little progress from performing these movements as one can understand that simply performing 10-15 minutes of static stretches per day can do little to reverse the affects of 8-12 plus hours a day of being in a seated position. The hip is a 3-dimensional joint complex, therefore active range of motion (AROM) just be used as part of the training process if one wishes to decrease the tightness of their hips and increase overall ROM.

The link below shows as great demonstration of a 90/90 Hip Flossing exercise. This stretch utilizes the natural movement potential of the hip complex.
