Lancaster, NH Ice Rink A source for updates on conditions at the Lancaster Ice Rink in Lancaster, NH.

02/22/2026

Today, Sunday Feb 22nd 2026 is the last day of skating at the Lancaster rink. The rising and warming sun is melting the ice from above and the thin, unskateable ice is growing with no end but a bare, asphalt expanse in the near future.
All totaled we had 64 days of skating with several interruptions due to snow storms and rink coverage and numerous rain events that eat skating ice for breakfast, lunch and dinner and don’t sleep when we do.
Thanks to my partner, the omnipresent Kurt , who took up the slack as the flu knocked me down for more than a month.
Here’s hoping we can replicate this next year.

Some bare spots sprouted today echoing my caution that the season’s end is near.
With the next few days looking at mid-30s it’s only a matter of time.
With the season starting in early December we are close to 60 plus days of skating for the season. Most unusual.

Checked the ice at noontime Sunday, Feb 15.
Folks skating, ice holding up well despite the bright sun and warming temps.
I’ve been warning about lengthening daylight and strengthening sun’s power softening the ice surface and making it unskateable. Hasn’t happened yet and I’m happy to be wrong.
This has been an unusual winter with a few warm spells followed by plunging temps and a quick return to skateable ice.
Hallelujah!

With cold temps under 30 degrees the ice is holding up pretty well despite the sun’s rising her in the sky be about a minute a day.
The progression of longer and stronger sunlight into February generally dooms skating about this point in the month.
Today a new coat of ice was holding up pretty well.
No telling how long that will last.
In the forcast for midweek next week is possible rain snow mix.
That’s a roundabout way to say if you want to skate, get to it as Mother Nature’s calling the shots, as always

Fresh ice at rink. Looks great to get in a skate before Tuesday afternoon’s small snowfall.
Just a reminder that the deeper we go in February the higher and stronger/warmer the sun is.At some point no matter the temperature we can’t keep ice and have to shut down.
Serious thanks to Kurt for taking on all rink/ice maintenance while I’ve been down with the flu and lingering after effects: the cost of spending lots of time with an LES 1st grader and preschooler.

Ice at rink today was superb, maybe 4 inches worth in places.
Expecting flurries tomorrow then another deep freeze for the weekend.
As we move closer to Feb 10 we continue to gain a minute more daylight with the sun higher and stronger than mid-January sun.
The effect, no matter how cold the temps, is for the ice surface to melt making skating impossible.
So far we’ve had a lengthy season and getting to Feb. 8th would give us a 50 day season which is fantastic despite the no skating days.
And yes it’s been darn cold but you can’t make and keep ice without it.

02/02/2026

Ice is great though temp was minus 10 this Monday morning Feb 2nd.
Temps will remain cool and skating good til Weds. when snow is likely.
As we reported earlier, typically as the sun gains more daylight length it becomes difficult to maintain ice much past Feb 10 but, I don’t remember temps this low into February. So maybe we’ll luck out and have a skating season that lasts longer than normal. Here’s hoping that’s the case.

01/30/2026

The rink was cleared today, Friday Jan 30, 2026 and a fresh coat of ice made providing perfect conditions.
Caution temps remain in single digits so please dress warmly.

01/30/2026

Temps will remain favorable for keeping the excellent ice throug next Sunday with no snow forcast but continued cold temps.
We are entering February which generally brings lengthening days as the sun climbs higher about a minute a day.
That generally means soft ice if clear sun is part of forcast.
So though it may remain cold the end of skating is dewing nearer.
Enjoy the remainder of our skating season. It’s been a corker.

01/24/2026

Be mindful of the temps today and the likely snow tomorrow late morning to sometime Monday.
If you skate today please locate any hockey pucks landing in snow piles or snowy edges to prevent serous damage to the snowblower.
Can’t imagine that anyone needs to scratch the skating itch given that temps at my normally warmer locale are at 6 below at 10 a.m. Sat. morn.
If so bundle up with faces covered and warm gear head to toe..

01/18/2026

Rink was cleared of snow this morning. Sunday Jan. 18.
Enjoy the ice..
Just a reminder: as Feb approaches, the sun’s strength and the length of daylight make it tough to maintain skateable ice.
Rarely can we keep ice past Feb. 10th so get your skating in now.

01/16/2026

We are open to skating.
After a nightfall when temps dropped 35, the puddles at the rink froze solid providing the thickest ice in memory.
Enjoy Motger Nature’s gift.
