What a fun Derby weekend 🐎 here at the campground. It was a little cold, but we still had a great crowd for our pot luck and to watch the race. Love our camping family!

🍁🍂 Hey there, fellow Herrington Lake lovers! 👋 Time to talk about something super important for keeping our lake beautiful and our community thriving: the Leaves! 🍁🍂

You might be looking at that pile of glorious, crunchy, autumnal goodness and thinking, "Time to rake and bag this up!" But hold your horses (or maybe your fishing poles)! When we rake and blow all those leaves into the street, down the storm drain, or near the water's edge, it turns into a big, mushy, aquatic problem.

Think of your leaves like tiny, organic grenades of nutrients. Sounds healthy, right? Wrong. When they wash into the lake, they decompose and unleash a massive feast of nitrogen and phosphorus.

What to Do Instead: Become a Leaf Ninja! 🍃🥋

Don't worry, we're not suggesting you just sit there and let your yard look like a forest floor (unless you're into that—more power to you!). Here are a few easy, lake-friendly ways to manage those fall colors:

1. Mulch 'Em! 🦸‍♂️ Run over those fallen leaves with your lawnmower. They chop up into tiny pieces that decompose quickly, feeding your lawn and soil. It's free fertilizer, and your yard will look super tidy without sending a nutrient bomb to the lake.

2. Compost 'Em! 🗑️ Create a pile in a safe spot away from any drainage areas. Leaf mold is a gardener's gold!

3. Leave 'Em (in Your Garden Beds)! 🛌 Leaves make fantastic natural mulch for your flower beds, protecting your plants all winter long. Plus, they create cozy homes for important pollinators like butterflies and other beneficial insects. You're basically building a little five-star resort for nature!

Let's do our part to keep Herrington Lake the clean, beautiful, and vibrant place we all love to call home or visit! A little extra effort on land means a lot more fun on the water.
