❄️ Why Trails Aren’t Open Yet — Here’s What You Should Know ❄️
We’ve been getting a lot of questions about trail openings, so here’s a quick breakdown of what affects our timeline:
1️⃣ State Law
Snowmobile trails can be open from Dec 1–Mar 31, with rare extensions into April.
2️⃣ Farm Work
Many southern counties still have crops standing or fall fieldwork underway. Trails can’t go in until harvesting, manure injection, and tillage are finished.
3️⃣ Hunting Seasons
Hunting varies by county and by landowner. Some don’t hunt at all; others hunt through Jan 4. Key dates:
• Gun season ended Nov 30
• Muzzleloader: Dec 10
• Antlerless-only (some counties): Dec 14
• Holiday hunt (some counties): Jan 1
• Archery: Jan 4
4️⃣ Trail Installation & Safety
Trails must be fully marked, installed, and safe before opening.
5️⃣ Ground Conditions
Some areas need to freeze before trails can safely open.
6️⃣ Club Preferences
Some clubs prefer to pack or groom before opening, which can add time.
7️⃣ Weather Forecasts
Warm-ups or changing forecasts can delay openings as clubs decide if conditions will hold.
This storm hit fast, leaving many farmers with crops still standing and lots of trail sections not yet installed.
For our club, we still need to:
✔️ Finish marking trails
✔️ Work with landowners to reroute around standing crops
✔️ Wait for landowners who are still hunting to give us the OK
If this snow had come in late January or February, we likely would’ve opened the same day it fell. But December snow brings a lot more variables.
Thanks for your patience and understanding — we’re working hard to get trails ready! 🛷❄️
