Jewelweed ✨🌱 (Impatiens capensis), its most useful traditional applications are topical, particularly for irritated or itchy skin. It is EVERYWHERE this time of year! Anyone else harvest jewelweed? If so, what’s your preferred method of use??👇🏻
🌿 Traditional benefits of jewelweed
* Poison ivy & poison oak: Traditionally applied to help soothe the itching and irritation associated with contact dermatitis.
* Itchy skin: Used topically for general itching and irritation.
* Bug bites & stings: The fresh plant or an infused preparation has traditionally been used to calm localized itching and irritation.
* Minor rashes: May provide a soothing effect on irritated skin.
* Minor skin irritation: Traditionally used on areas irritated by plants, insects, or environmental exposure.
* Mildly soothing/anti-inflammatory: Laboratory research suggests jewelweed contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.
The recipe I followed👇🏻
🌿 Jewelweed-Infused Olive Oil Salve
(I harvested fresh Jewelweed, chopped and let wilt for about 24 hours to get rid of some of the water content to prevent spoilage in the salve. But, you don’t want to let dry completely like some other herbs as the watery sap in the Jewelweed is the good stuff 👌🏻)
* 4 cups wilted/chopped fresh jewelweed
* 4 cups olive oil — enough to completely cover the plant material
* Infuse gently using a double boiler/very low heat for several hours, or use a longer room-temperature infusion. (I used my crock pot on warm/low setting.)
* Strain the plant material very well and measure the finished infused oil.
🐝 Turn it into salve
For a medium-firm salve:
* 4 cups strained jewelweed-infused olive oil
* 4 oz beeswax (½ cup grated beeswax is approximately 2–2½ oz)
* Optional: Vitamin E oil — about 1 teaspoon
* Optional essential oils if desired.
Method:
1. Warm the infused oil gently.
2. Add beeswax and stir until completely melted.
3. Remove from heat.
4. Stir in vitamin E and any essential oils.
5. Pour into tins/jars and let cool uncovered until solid.
Enjoy 🌿
If you’re foraging, avoid harvesting plants growing near busy roads, railroad tracks, or areas that may have been sprayed with herbicides or contaminated by pollutants. 🌿
