RANGER ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
This season we will be spotlighting former Rangers that went on to play at the next level. They’ll answer a few questions and give advice to current and upcoming LHS hockey players. Since we have 8 girls on the squad this year we decided to lead off with one of Lakewood’s best, Christine Patno.
When asked why she chose to play hockey at LHS…
“I graduated in 1999 and I
Played for LHS because it was the best way to challenge myself (at that time, no girl had ever played on the boys varsity team) and get faster/stronger compared to playing against the women.”
Where did you play after graduating from LHS?
“ I Was recruited by several colleges, but obviously, to become a Buckeye was a no brainer. I was a 4-year scholarship athlete from 2000-2004 at Ohio State University. After graduation, I went on to play for the the semi -professional women's team, Minnesota Whitecaps, such played in the (formerly known as) NWHL based out of Canada. After that, went on to become an NCAA D1 college coach at Niagara University.
Other doors opened up for me from playing hockey!”
When asked what her favorite LHS Hockey memory was Christine said…
“My best memory of playing for LHS was when we played against Cleveland Heights and I took out a huge D at our blue line, then went down the ice with Vanuch and scored a goal... The place went freaking crazy (away game).”
When asked what advice she would give players that want to play after high school…
“What I would tell the kids that want to play at the next level.... They should be sure to position themselves to be seen at tournaments where the recruiters go to watch the games.. also, they should be sure to focus on their studies, fitness/conditioning, diet and mental health (positive self talk and being able to move on after making mistakes, etc)”
Lakewood plays Nordonia at home tonight 11/22 at 7 pm. Come support the team! Stay tuned for our Ranger Alumni spotlight next week!kee
