๐ฃ Winterhurst is in the news! Crain's Cleveland Business took a look at the ongoing transformation happening right here at our home rink. ๐โธ๏ธ
The City of Lakewood is investing $8 million to modernize our 51-year-old arena, and we're now nearing completion of the second phase of renovations โ with a third phase planned for 2027. From refreshed spaces to major facility upgrades, these improvements are all about keeping Winterhurst a home for our community for decades to come.
And through all of it? Both of our rinks have stayed open the entire time โ so the skating, hockey, and public sessions you love never stopped.
Huge thanks to the City of Lakewood for continuing to invest in this beloved community asset. The best is yet to come! โ๏ธ
Russ Sinkewich, who oversees programming at Lakewoodโs Winterhurst Ice Arena, figures he has spent more hours at the city-owned arena than just about anyone alive. His parents, Marty and Marilyn, met at Winterhurst decades ago, back when it was still an outdoor rink outside the cityโs old ice plant.
For Sinkewich, preserving Winterhurst is personal. For Lakewood, itโs practical. The city is in the middle of a three-phase renovation designed to modernize the 51-year-old arena for the more than 300,000 unique people who use it each year for hockey, figure skating and community recreation.
Last year, Lakewood completed the first phase, replacing the arenaโs aging refrigeration equipment, upgrading its lighting and modernizing the mechanical systems.
The current phase, scheduled for completion in September, will add about 12,000 square feet of new space to the 88,000-square foot arena, including locker rooms, an indoor training area, improved accessibility, new spectator seating and an elevator.
A third phase, planned for 2027, will replace the buildingโs aging HVAC system. The three phases are a roughly $8 million investment, funded through a combination of city dollars and support from Cuyahoga County and the state of Ohio.
