How big are those waves?

Here’s a rule-of-thumb for assessing wave height while on the water:

At 1ft, other kayaks will disappear up to the cockpit…

At 2ft, everything below the shoulders disappears behind the wave….

At 3ft, you’ll lose sight of other paddlers except for the very top of their heads…

At 4ft, the tips of the paddle will show during forward strokes, but not much else.

Over 5ft…. 😳

This week’s unsettled weather has put a damper on rentals. Matt is on a mission to change that.

Quick reentry. Get in. Get safe. Then deal with the boat.

In this video, ACA Paddlesports
instructors Josh Scott and Mark Pecot demonstrate a fast kayak reentry that prioritizes the paddler—not draining the boat.

The paddler is back in his kayak in 15 seconds and moving away from danger within 20 seconds.

Key takeaways:

• Both paddlers are active. The swimmer flips his own kayak and communicates with the rescuer.
• Contact tow = quick stability. Once the paddler is back in, the rescuer can stabilize with a contact tow and move them toward safety.
• Practice makes it seamless. Josh and Mark work together smoothly because they practice rescues regularly. (Note the paddle toss! 👀)

Sometimes the priority isn’t getting the kayak completely dry—it’s getting the paddler out of danger.
