Kayak rolling classes are just a week away! There's no better way to start off the new year than with a new skill that unlocks your potential when kayaking. We can even teach you how to do this one! (We're not really sure what to call it)

2026 rolling classes dates at Lakewood High School Natatorium:
January 3
January 10
February 21
February 28

Rolling I: This intro class is the essential introduction to rolling that all kayakers need. In this class we’ll develop your comfort in the “underwater inverted position” by practicing controlled wet exits, developing a strong hip snap, and performing and participating in bow rescues. Those skills will give you a foundation for success before you move on to Rolling II.
3:30PM - $60.00

Rolling II: Put it all together with one of our ACA-certified kayak instructors! Now that you're familiar and comfortable underwater, we'll help you develop the muscle-memory needed to create a bomb-proof roll. This course has a low student to coach ratio so that you get the personal feedback needed to get the most out of your pool time.
5:00PM - $65.00

All rolling classes occur at Lakewood High School's pool. All equipment (kayak, helmet, paddle) provided. Questions? Reach out to us at [email protected].
Both classes available at https://www.41n.com/kayak-sup-classes

Paddleboard touring safety checklist:

✅ PFD (whether inflatable or inherently buoyant it should be worn, not strapped to the board).

✅ Leash. Properly worn and in good repair.

✅ Weather Forecast - know the marine forecast so you don’t get caught off guard.

✅ Cold water gear - a wetsuit is strongly recommended for water temps below 63F. A dry bag a windbreaker and fleece layer can help prevent hypothermia from windy / wet conditions.

✅ Communication - a waterproof cell phone is a must, but for coastal paddling a VHF radio is a more reliable way to get help.

✅ Float Plan - always let loved ones know where you are paddling and when you are expected back.

Alarming Trend Shows Increase In Paddleboarding Deaths In Latest Coast Guard Report | The U.S. Coast Guard recently released the 2024 Recreational Boating Statistics, and while overall boating deaths are at a 50-year all-time low, paddlesports are seeing an alarming trend. Paddlesports continued to account for approximately one in every three boating fatalities in the United States last year. In particular, standup paddleboarding saw a 164 percent increase in fatalities, from 11 fatalities in 2023 to 29 fatalities in 2024.

Paddlesports overall saw 165 fatalities in 2024, down from 183 fatalities in 2023. Drowning accounted for three-quarters of all 556 recreational boating fatalities last year, and of those victims, 87 percent were not wearing life jackets. Alcohol use was the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Continue reading: https://bit.ly/4fcZ1rp

Making sure you finish your roll in a strong position is the key to a safer and more reliable combat roll.

Compare the finishing positions in these two rolls.

Too much reliance on the paddle by the top paddler results in hands stacked on one side of the boat and a nearly vertical paddle. From here, the paddler can’t effectively brace, sweep, or scull…leaving the paddler unprepared for that next wave or eddy line.

Work on finishing in a strong bracing position every time you practice.

That’s a wrap for the season at our rental center. We’ll see you in May 2026…which just happened to be the 20th season at our Rocky River location!

In the meantime, there’s still lots of paddling to be done and we’ll keep you posted on all our adventures! (And we’ll probably finally get around to posting some of the photos we took this summer! 😂)
