Southwestern Senior High School Sailing Team kicked off the Fall Season at Rochester Yacht Club on Saturday, September 9th. This was the very first high school level regatta for Avi Whitmore, Ethan Arnone, and Jack Webb, with Annika Hedin being the senior sailor on the event’s team. Winds were moderate and the weather was mild throughout the day. The course was made challenging for all competitors with the windward mark being located near natural shoreline features that blocked the wind; starts were also especially competitive.

Avi Whitmore and Ethan Arnone sailing in Boat 1 finished in 2nd place in two races and earned four finishes in the top 5. Jack Webb and Annika Hedin sailing in Boat 14 had a finish as high as 7th place. “Every team fought for their placement in each race,” said Coach Hunter Farris. “I’m proud of how much our sailors accomplished in their first high school level regatta.”
Farris continued, “We’re starting the season with an enthusiastic group who are making great strides in their sailing experience.”

Southwestern Team 1 finished 6th Overall, and Team 2 finished 14th Overall.

E-Scow Nationals Photos and Results Lake Mendota

CLYC sailors participated in the largest one design events ever held for E- scows in Madison Wisconsin over the weekend.

The 100th anniversary of the E-scow class design was recognized during the running of 65th anniversary of NCESA National Championship Regatta.

The very first E National Championship was held at our own CLYC in 1959

There were 126 entries in this year’s event with over 500 competitors on the racecourse simultaneously representing 26 different yacht clubs.

Brooks Turcott sailing CH-57 Smooth Operator sailed in his very first Nationals in the “rookie” designation sub fleet finishing 95th overall but beating 31 other entrants. Brooks finished 20th our of a fleet of 34 entrants in the rookie sub-fleet. Brooks commented “it was a huge thrill sailing with so many other competitors.

Brad Turner sailing CH-7 Tigre finished 41st besting 85 other entrants.

Rick Turner sailing CH-6 Big Bopper finished 40th with the same number of points but winning in a tie breaker with Bradley. Rick was advised to buy a lottery ticket because the chances of two CLYC boats being tied in such a large fleet was extremely low. Rick also finished 13th in the “masters” sub- fleet out of 31 other “masters “ competitors.
