Training as a new or expecting mom can feel intimidating, confusing and lonely. But not at Decent Shape!

Strong as a Mother is our group workout specifically designed for new and expecting moms.

Here’s what to expect:
✅ Pelvic floor-friendly strength training
✅ Pre & postnatal core work
✅ Mom-friendly mobility
✅ A community of women who get it

Maybe you’re navigating your growing bump in the second trimester, or just trying to get back to movement six months post-delivery. No matter where you are in your motherhood journey, you deserve to feel strong.

Face Pulls always feel awkward as heck for you?

Been there. When we grip something tight, we get what’s called irradiation up the entire arm and into the upper traps and neck. Irradiation is just a fancy term for the idea that muscle activation in one area (in this case, the hands and forearms) will often cause activation in adjacent areas.

You can try this yourself - put one hand out at shoulder height. Now, squeeze your fist as tight as you can. You’ll feel that tension travel all the way up to your neck and upper traps.

Irradiation can be useful for some exercises, but for face pulls, it often leads to too much tension in the neck and upper traps instead of our other important back muscles located further down the posterior chain.

By looping your wrists through a band, you can keep your grip relaxed and focus on really using the upper and mid back to drive the movement. Allow your shoulder blades to wrap and around your ribcage as you reach forward, then down and behind as you lead with the elbows back. I go very light on these to make sure the right muscles are doing the job - and make sure your rib cage stays nice and stable so that we don’t get false range of motion in our scapula just by leaning backwards!

Struggle to feel your glutes during standing exercises or activities? Try the Half-Kneeling Single-Leg Hinge to really isolate your hip extension and get those glutes nice and toasty! 🌶️

Set support an arm’s length away. Place opposite hand on working side - either the front of hip, or bottom of rib cage. Hinge back by pushing the working hip back in space and loading up the glute, allowing yourself to naturally rotate and “wind” into position. From there, focus on bracing your low back and creating the upward motion ONLY by pushing that same hip forward. Slowly return to the starting position and unwind your rotation as you do this.

Tip: a partner can hold your ankle if you’re really struggling with the stability at first!

A couple intros and a bittersweet goodbye! 👋

Meet Josee McGee and Kyle Patterson, two friendly faces you may see at Decent Shape.

Josee is StrongFirst Kettlebell Certified (SFG I & SFB). She got into kettlebell training in 2020 and quickly noticed that it not only helped her feel stronger, but also made her favorite active hobbies more fun and pain-free. Outside the gym, Josee is a singer-songwriter who performs all over Northeast Ohio. “My goal is simple: I want to help you access joy, confidence, and security through strength!” -Josee

Kyle Patterson is a certified personal trainer with over 15 years of experience in strength training, endurance sports, and general fitness. He’s also passionate about nutrition coaching. Outside the studio, he enjoys making art and spending time in nature (even when it’s cold!). “I know how important it is to serve your inner peace, health and joy rather than meet a standard set by someone else.” -Kyle

And finally, an overdue goodbye and note of appreciation for Molly! recently moved to Lake Tahoe to take a role as Senior Health and Safety Specialist at Heavenly Ski Resort. We’re so grateful for the positive impact you made here and wish you the best! ✨
