I learned this chant from my dear teacher Lakshmisha and I continue to say it each morning. I am so grateful to have met him in this lifetime, and I feel even more grateful for the opportunity to continue to chant with him thanks to 🙏🏼 Lakshmisha brings so much joy to so many people that sit & chant with him.

This class time set aside for chanting is 100% inspired by him. Join if you would like, no experience is necessary. We go over the basics. Chanting is followed by Quiet Space. This space is for personal seated meditation practices and or supported rest. ALL are welcome to join. P r ā n ā y ā m a - regulation of the breathing process
(the fifth limb of Ashtanga Yoga)

When beginning to practice prānāyāma it is important to find a teacher to guide you. Practice without any guidance at all can be dangerous. It should be gentle with short retentions (if any at all) in the beginning and should bring a sense of peace, calm and balance to the body and mind.

Below are three sutras on Prānāyāma from Edwin Bryant’s commentary:

II.49 Tasmin sati śvāsa-praśvāsayor gati-vicchedah prānāyāmah
When that [āsana] is accomplished, prānāyāma, breath control, [follows]. This consists of the regulation of the incoming and outgoing breaths.

II.50 bāhyābhyantara-stambha-vrttih deśa-kāla-sankhyābhih paridrsto dīrgha-sūksmah
[Prānāyāmah] manifests as external, internal, and restrained movements [of breath]. These are drawn out and subtle in accordance to place, time, and number.

II.51 bāhyābhyantara-visayāksepī caturthah
The fourth [type of Prānāyāma] surpasses the limits of the external and the internal.

The next of the Limbs of Yoga is Āsana. We find little on the subject in the yoga sutras. Patanjali describes it simply...

In sutra 2.46
Sthira-sukham āsanam
(Posture should be steady and comfortable)

Not much is said but that is a beautiful way to approach any āsana practice.

I’ll, again, quote from Edwin’s commentary on this sutra. Read the rest if you are interested & have the book.

“In other words, āsana’s relevance and function for the classical Yoga tradition are to train the body so that it does not disturb or distract the mind of the yogī in any way when sitting in meditation… The point is that yogic postures are useful only to the extent to which they facilitate fixing the mind completely.”

Samādhi-siddhir-īśvara-pranidhānāt

We see Isvara many different times in the yoga sutras. In reference to the niyamas we find it in Sutra 2.32 where patanjali lists the niyamas. In sutra 2.45 he explains that by total surrender to Isvara, samadhi is attained. Patanjali also refers to Isvara Pranidhana in the very beginning of the second book with sutra 2.1 on Kriya Yoga.

“There are hundreds and thousands of names for God but none of them conveys the exact idea of God. They may give a picture of one aspect of God, but not the fullness. God is, was, and always will be - without beginning or end, infinite, and omnipresent. For such a great One, there should be a name that conveys those same ideas. The name “chair” can remind you of a chair, but you can’t sit on it. But God’s name should not only denote the fullness of God and itself represent God, it should also bring God to you. And such a name cannot be anything but OM.” --Sutra 1.27, commentary from Sri Swami Satchidananda

Sutra II.44
svādhyāyād ista-devatā-samprayogah

From study [of scripture], a connection with one’s deity of choice is established.

“Study, svādyāya, refers to reading sacred scriptures whose matter is liberation, and the commentators also include the repetition of Om here. Hariharānanda expands this to include devotional mantras. He notes that by practicing this niyama, one’s desire for worldly objects diminishes, and one’s taste for spiritual objects increases.” - Taken from Edwin’s commentary on sutra II.32

•A U S T E R I T Y•

“In yoga, tapas has not the same connotation as when practiced exclusively, outside of the yogic context. In yoga, it refers to the ability to sustain our practice in the face of hardship. From this ability great power arises. This is especially true in the case of the Ashtanga Vinyasa method. However we need to be careful how we use this power. From a yogic viewpoint the reason to practice tapas is only to remove the veil of impurities to prepare us for the revelation of the light of the self. Any attachment to powers would cover the light with a new veil of ignorance.”

Back to the limbs... we left off with Niyamas (personal observances). The first one, Saucha 🤍. Translates to cleanliness, purity, clearness. Keeping things clean inside and out. The purification of our minds, speech and body is essential to any spiritual practice. This can be achieved through a healthy diet, general hygiene, asana, pranayama, meditation, mindfulness, and so much more. The depth of Saucha goes on....
