“Don’t get caught in the comparison trap. Focus on your own growth and your own unique qualities. Your journey is your own.”

Another dancer’s success is not your failure.

In a room full of talent, it’s easy to look left and right and wonder why your timeline doesn't look like theirs. But someone else’s highlight reel isn't the standard for your personal progress.

Your technique, your artistic voice, and your timeline are entirely your own. The only person you should be trying to beat is who you were in the studio yesterday.

Put the blinders on, trust your training, and focus on your own lane.

Save this for the next time you need a reminder to step out of the comparison trap!

THE DANCER’S DOWNLOAD: MY GOAL IS CONFIDENCE, NOT CRITICISM.

Dear Dancer,

When you’re standing in that backstage tunnel waiting for your music to cue, and you look over at the judges sitting behind the table with their pens ready... what are you thinking?

If your immediate thought is, "I hope they don't see my mistakes," I want to completely change your perspective today.

The Insider Scoop: I’m not sitting behind that table looking for reasons to take points away. I’m sitting there looking for reasons to give them to you. I’m searching for your passion, your dedication, and that magical moment where you stop overthinking and just let go.

When a judge leaves a note about a foot not being pointed or an alignment being slightly off, it is never a critique of who you are as a dancer. It’s a roadmap to your personal best.

Keep these 3 rules in mind this season:
1. A Comment is a Compliment
2. Correction = Growth
3. Confidence is a Choice

The Clarity: Next time you see me (or any judge) at the table, remember: We are in your corner. We want to be inspired by YOU.

Feedback isn't a critique, it's clarity.

Now take a deep breath and go leave it all on the floor!

Drop a "💜" if you're ready to view your feedback as a roadmap this season!

First impressions are everything, and on the competition stage, that impression happens long before the music begins to play.

When a team takes the floor with their heads held high, executing their entrance with infectious energy and sharp focus, they are claiming the space. Watching them move into their opening formation with total confidence and effortless awareness of their spacing sends a clear message to the panel: We are prepared, we are proud, and we are ready.

That pre-music poise sets a beautiful tone for the performance. It builds anticipation and gives the judges immediate interest in what’s to come.
In your rehearsals this week, don't just practice the choreography from count 1. Practice the entrance. Teach them to breathe in that stage energy from the moment their feet leave backstage. They've put in the work, now let's see them own the floor!

“Progress that is not perfect is better than no progress at all!”

Mistakes are proof that you're actually trying.

So often we hold ourselves back in class because we're worried about how we look to the room, the mirror, or the teacher. But no one ever grew by staying inside their comfort zone.

Give yourself permission to be a work in progress today. Take the risk, make the correction, and trust that every shaky step is bringing you closer to your goal.

GOING BARE-LEGGED? YOUR COSTUME FIT MUST BE FLAWLESS.

As a judge, I have no issue with the bare-leg aesthetic. When a routine is well-tailored, it looks clean, modern, and beautiful. It doesn't disrupt the leg line at all.
However, ditching tights means your costume design carries a massive responsibility.

Under the harsh exposure of stage lighting, light-colored fabrics can instantly become sheer. Choreography choices; like extensions, jumps, and floor work, can cause briefs/shorts to ride up, leading to inappropriate exposure.

The moment the panel or the audience feels anxious or uncomfortable for the dancer, the performance illusion is broken. We want your performers to feel powerful, confident, and secure.

If you choose to go without tights, you must test the costume under intense light and full-out movement. Line the garments heavily, use proper adhesive if necessary, and ensure the cut provides total coverage. If you can't guarantee the fit, opt for tights or a more secure brief to keep the focus strictly on the talent.

How does your team handle the tights vs. no tights debate while keeping costume security a priority? Let’s share ideas below!

Are you coaching for the score or the standard?

It’s easy to let the pressure of the competitive season turn into stress. But as Jon Gordon points out in You Win in the Locker Room First, there is a massive difference between applying positive pressure and imposing unnecessary stress.

When we focus heavily on extrinsic outcomes, like placements or subjective judge scores, we create an environment driven by anxiety. But when we apply pressure to controllable inputs, like; work ethic, mental prep, and ex*****on, we build resilient, confident athletes who thrive under the lights.

Take a look at your goals for this week: Are they rooted in stress or actionable pressure?

When a judge writes "explore more dynamics," it’s easy to assume the dancers just need to push harder. But true dynamics require a balance of two things: movement texture and musical texture.
If you've over-cleaned a routine to the point that every single count has the same weight, the artistry disappears. But the trap might also be in the use of music! If your movement lives at a constant, explosive Level 10 riding that driving downbeat from start to finish, your choreography will naturally look flat and turn into a blur.
Don't let rigid counts or the music trap kill your performance quality. Leave room for the highlights!
I hope this brings a little more clarity to your rehearsal. If you have a comment on your scoresheet you want me to break down, drop it below and I'll use them on future posts.
