Three generation goose hunt today. Left the FB rig at home again today and the big uglies worked again. Sometimes it pays to be diffrent.

The conditions were really foggy early today and the geese were not talking much. To much calling and they would not finish. When the fog lifted the geese became more talkative and we did the same. Match your calling to the conditions and birds!

Is Big And Ugly Better?

Last year was a first for me in that I was able to take my son (4 at the time) goose hunting for the first time. I waited for that perfect day when I knew we had lots of geese in the area to try and get him hooked. That day never arrived so I chose a day with nice weather and we hit the field. Not wanting to get him up extra early I left the full bodies and trailer at home and grabbed the "Big Uglies" from the rafters. The result...a 5 bird limit over the monster 42" shells I used to run as a kid that we code named the "Big Uglies".

Fast forward to this year and he is five. The first two trips we pulled the trailer out, set the full bodies, and struggled to pull in the geese that were using a flight line farther away than usual. Knowing the geese were using a flight line out a ways, I grabbed the "big uglies" the last two trips and the result was near limits both trips as Dad could not hit anything and his nerf gun was just missing them.

After the last hunt we drove around the area to look at what the competition was running. All 4 spreads we viewed had full bodies that were either fully flocked or had flocked heads which got me thinking. I bet these geese have never flew over a 42" plus decoy....No wonder they worked so well!

Long story short...don't discount the old school tricks and sometimes just being "Big and Ugly" is better than "Flocked and Sexy"!
