You may have heard about the rich biodiversity that makes up the Southern Appalachian forests, but there’s also plenty beneath the water too!

Georgia ranks third in the nation for native freshwater fish biodiversity, just behind Tennessee and Alabama. Roughly 265 species are considered native to the state, with many representing endemic species, or those not found anywhere else in the world. The 5 described species are: the Ocmulgee shiner, Altamaha shiner, Chattahoochee sculpin, Etowah darter, and the Cherokee darter.

Not only are the species themselves in great variation, but the behaviors, life histories, color patterns, and other characteristics of each make Georgia’s freshwater fish unique and diverse.

While we can boast of our flora and fauna biodiversity, we must remember our role in conserving and protecting these ecosystems so we may continue to enjoy them, and so they may continue to thrive. Dozens of fish species in Georgia are imperiled, meaning their populations have decreased so dramatically that they’re on the verge of whole extinction. Factors like rapid urbanization, poor land use practices, chemical pollutants in the water, and above-ground practices are putting our freshwater ecosystems at great risk, and once we lose them, we may never get them back.

On your next fishing trip or kayak excursion to your favorite Georgia lake, remember to practice the principles of Leave No Trace. Every individual effort matters, and our freshwater ecosystems will benefit with your help!
