Steven Wesleyâs relentless motor and dominant two-way ability carried him from Bartow High School to the University of Miami before ultimately cementing his legacy as one of North Alabamaâs greatest defenders of the decade.
At Bartow High School, Wesley emerged as one of Polk Countyâs premier football players. He excelled on both sides of the ball, starring at defensive end and tight end for the Yellow Jackets. During his senior season, Wesley recorded 70 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six sacks, and one interception, while adding 10 receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns on offense. As a junior, he totaled 63 tackles, six sacks, and one interception, while catching six passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
His dominance earned him Polk County Player of the Year honors, Team MVP recognition, First-Team Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-District honors at both defensive end and tight end, and Class 4A First Team All-State recognition. Wesley was also rated the No. 1 defensive end on the Florida Times-Union Super 75 and ranked among the top defensive ends nationally. His recruitment attracted offers from several powerhouse programs before he ultimately chose the University of Miami over Ohio State, Alabama, and Ole Miss.
Wesley began his collegiate career with the Hurricanes and developed into a contributor along Miamiâs defensive front. After redshirting in 2006, he played in nine games in 2007 and recorded six tackles with one tackle for loss. In 2008, he started 11 games and finished with 21 tackles and three tackles for loss, posting a career-high four tackles against North Carolina. Over his Miami career, Wesley totaled 33 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and three sacks.
Looking for a fresh start, Wesley transferred to the University of North Alabama, where his career reached another level. In 2010, he recorded 51 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and eight sacks, helping lead the Lions to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. He followed that with an even stronger 2011 season, posting 57 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks while earning First Team All-Gulf South Conference honors.
Over his two seasons at North Alabama, Wesley compiled approximately 108 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, and 18 sacks, establishing himself as one of the most disruptive defenders in program history. Years after his playing career ended, his impact was formally recognized when he was selected to the University of North Alabama Football Team of the Decade (2010â2019), honoring the greatest players of the era.
From Bartow to Coral Gables and ultimately Florence, Alabama, Steven Wesleyâs football journey showcased the talent produced in Polk County and demonstrated how perseverance and development can lead to lasting success. His accomplishments at multiple levels of college football left a legacy that continues to be recognized years after his playing days ended.
