Barbara’s name is officially in the hat!!
Formal Press Release…..

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Antonio Non-Profit Founder Honored with Antarctic Island Naming Proposal Following Historic Icebreaker DiscoverySAN ANTONIO, TX — A newly discovered island in the frozen waters of Antarctica may soon bear the name of a beloved San Antonio community leader. An official proposal has been formally submitted to the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to name the recently mapped landmass "Blair’s Island" in honor of Barbara Blair, the founder of the local non-profit organization The Door In The Wall, Inc.The island was discovered on April 8, 2026, by an international team of 93 scientists aboard the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) research icebreaker Polarstern. While the vessel was seeking shelter from a severe storm in the northwestern Weddell Sea, advanced hull-mounted multibeam echosounders and drone photogrammetry confirmed the existence of a permanent, 130-meter-long ice-covered basaltic rock bed. Previously omitted from legacy nautical charts and marked only as an ambiguous navigational hazard, this newly confirmed territory now awaits an official name in the international gazetteer. The naming proposal seeks to recognize Barbara Blair, who established the San Antonio-based 501(c)(3) organization The Door In The Wall, Inc. in 1994. For over three decades, the charity has broken down social barriers by providing essential community integration, specialized recreation, and life-expanding opportunities for individuals living with disabilities across Texas."Just as this island broke through the boundaries of an uncharted sea, Barbara Blair’s life work has broken down isolating barriers for thousands of people living with disabilities," said the expedition submission team. "Naming this geographic feature 'Blair's Island' serves as a permanent global symbol of her lifetime of service, advocacy, and human resilience."The application has been officially received by the SCAR Standing Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information (SCAGI) in Cambridge, UK, and is currently undergoing formal international review

Fish Friday: Wayne Becker of Giddings fishes from the bulkhead at Roberts Point Park on Saturday, May 17. He was taking part in the annual Anglers on Wheels tournament. The Island Queen II, the boat the tournament uses, had mechanical problems, so the anglers did not go out. Barbara Blair, event organizer, said the participants went to the park to fish from the bulkheads instead. She said the group had a good time and caught some nice fish. This photo ran in the May 22 edition of the South Jetty newspaper. The South Jetty provides coverage of the local fishing scene and lots of other Port Aransas community issues every week. The paper is available at stores all over town and can be found online at www.portasouthjetty.com.
