The Tastiest Way to Stay Hydrated this Summer: 💧

We all know we need to up our water intake when it's hot outside, but sometimes drinking water can feel like a downright chore.

The perfect solution that is just as tasty as it is simple: infusions!

Some ingredients that can be used in infusions are:

Fruits: Strawberries, raspberries, oranges, lemons, limes, blueberries, blackberries, pomegranate seeds...

Herbs: Basil, mint, thyme, rosemary...

Vegetables: Cucumber, celery, fennel...

A couple of my favs are:
🥒 Cucumber + Basil: Wash both your cucumber and fresh basil, then cut half your cucumber into slices. Place the cucumbers as well as a handful of basil into your water. Add ice, place the water in the fridge, and make sure to let the combination sit for at least half an hour*. The longer you let the flavors infuse, the stronger they will be.

🍓Strawberry + Mint: Wash your strawberry and mint, then cut a handful of strawberries into thirds so the flavor will have more opportunity to soak into the water. Make sure to remove the leaves! Place the strawberries in your water, along with a few sprigs of mint. Add ice, place the water in the fridge, and make sure to let the combination sit for at least half an hour*. The longer you let the flavors infuse, the stronger they will be.

🍊Orange + Basil: Wash your orange and fresh basil, then cut the orange into slices. Place the orange slices in your water, adding in a few basil leaves. Add ice, place the water in the fridge, and make sure to let the combination sit for at least half an hour*. The longer you let the flavors infuse, the stronger they will be. Citrus infuses more quickly than other fruits, so take that into account!

*Though it’s recommend letting your infusions sit for a period of time for maximum flavor, you can also enjoy your drink immediately for a more subtle taste.

When you're done infusing, you have the option of straining out your ingredients or enjoying your drink with them. Some ingredients will break down into the water, such as berries, and cause a fun color change in your water.

Rest and be thankful.

Three days on. One day off. Two days on. One day off.

It’s a rhythm I’ve been doing for awhile now.

That’s how I approach the week.

I kick off on Tuesday, but you can start the sequence on any day of the week that best suits you.

You go hard for three days. You push yourself.

Then, day 4, you give your body a break: Active Recovery.

Lean into recovery, it’s important. Apply yourself to feeling better as a reward for the hard work you put in. Be grateful for the aches and pains because they let you know the training is working.

Here are some active recovery activities to consider:
Outdoor walk
Bike ride
Hiking
Stretching
Yoga

You don’t need to stress yourself out on an active recovery day.

What Do You Need To Create Healthy Monster Apple Snacks?
Apples
Peanut Butter
Candy Eyes
Strawberries
Sunflower Seeds
How To Create Healthy Monster Apple Snacks
:
Start by slicing your apples. Slice them in quarters to ensure you have enough room to make your monster mouths.

Next, slice a v-shape into the backside of each apple slice to create the mouth.

Add a layer of peanut butter (thick or thin – your choice) to the top and bottom of the mouth you created.

Now slice a strawberry and place one of the slices in the mouth to create the tongue.

Use your sunflower seeds to create your monster’s teeth. If you don’t have any sunflower seeds handy, breaking a piece of popcorn into little pieces also works pretty well.

To complete your monster, add your candy eyes and, roar! Monster snacks complete.

Why take a rest day?
Taking a day off is important both mentally and physically, and it is an essential part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Not resting can increase muscle soreness, decrease your strength and performance, lead to muscle fatigue, and increase your risk of overuse injuries such as stress fractures and muscle strains.

In order to understand why rest days are so important, it is helpful to know a little bit about your muscles. There are three types of muscles in the human body – smooth, cardiac, and skeletal. Smooth and cardiac muscles are involuntary muscles that assist in bodily function. Skeletal muscles allow for movement and are the most adaptable tissue in the body, which is great because that’s exactly what we want them to do – adapt.

Hypertrophy is the growth of a muscle. In order for hypertrophy to occur, you have to provide the right conditions. How do you do that? Break those muscles down. Yup. During resistance training, muscle fibers are damaged. This is known as microtrauma. Once the muscle is broken down, it needs to be repaired. Muscle fiber is repaired two ways: through protein and through rest. Eating and relaxing – sign me up!

When the muscle fiber is repaired, the muscle is a little bit larger than before. In order for the muscle to grow, you also must allow enough time between workouts for the muscle to repair.
