Charles Minthorn Murphy, famously known as ‘Mile-a-Minute’ Murphy, made history on June 1, 1899, by becoming one of the first cyclists to break the speed record of riding a mile in under a minute. His feat of cycling one mile in just 57.8 seconds meant he exceeded 60 miles per hour, an astonishing achievement for the era. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1870, Murphy was a confident and skilled cyclist, inspired by a barroom argument over how fast a cyclist could realistically go. To prove his boast that no locomotive could outrun him, he teamed up with the Long Island Railroad, which laid smooth wooden boards over a straight two-mile stretch near Babylon, New York, to serve as his track.

The challenge was dangerous. The locomotive had to push a specially fitted coach with a viewing platform behind it, acting as Murphy’s pacemaker. During his record run, Murphy faced intense conditions, including flying hot cinders, sand, and wave-like track movements caused by the speeding train. Despite these obstacles, he kept his focus on a white line on the coach, breaking the elusive “mile in a minute” barrier. The dramatic finish saw Murphy narrowly avoid a collision as the train braked unexpectedly, with two men on the platform pulling him to safety just in time. His courage and determination remain legendary in cycling history.
