🚨 BEYOND WEIGHT LOSS: GLP-1s & HEART DISEASE ❤️
Most people still think of GLP-1 medications primarily as weight-loss drugs.
But cardiovascular disease is one area where the science has already moved beyond the number on the scale.
One of the biggest pieces of evidence came from the SELECT trial, published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Researchers followed 17,604 adults who had overweight or obesity AND established cardiovascular disease — but did not have diabetes.
The results were significant:
📊 Major cardiovascular events — cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack or nonfatal stroke — occurred in 6.5% of participants receiving semaglutide versus 8.0% receiving placebo.
That translates to approximately a 20% relative reduction in risk for the combined cardiovascular endpoint.
But here's the important part when we talk about research versus proven indications:
✅ WHAT IS ACTUALLY FDA-APPROVED?
On March 8, 2024, the FDA approved Wegovy (semaglutide) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in adults with established cardiovascular disease who also have overweight or obesity.
And the current FDA prescribing information continues to include reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events as an approved indication.
So in this specific population, cardiovascular risk reduction isn't simply an interesting theory being investigated anymore.
It's an FDA-approved indication.
🔬 WHAT ARE SCIENTISTS STILL STUDYING?
There are still some BIG questions.
Researchers continue investigating:
➡️ How much of the cardiovascular benefit comes from weight loss itself versus other biological effects.
➡️ The potential roles of inflammation, blood pressure, metabolic improvements and vascular function.
➡️ Whether cardiovascular benefits extend to broader populations who don't already have established cardiovascular disease.
And cardiovascular disease is only one piece of this story.
We're now seeing GLP-1 research extend into the kidneys, liver disease, sleep apnea, cardiovascular health and other areas of metabolic disease.
That's exactly why I'm starting this series.
BEYOND WEIGHT LOSS will separate the hype from the evidence:
✅ What's FDA-approved
🔬 What's actually being studied
📊 What the clinical trials really found
Because there's a HUGE difference between “research suggests” and “the FDA has approved.”
Follow along — tomorrow we'll look at another area where this research is moving Beyond Weight Loss.
