🐲 It’s Hellbender Breeding Season Again!

This is one of the most important—and sensitive—times of the year for Eastern Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis).

Male hellbenders establish and defend nest cavities beneath large rocks. After spawning, males remain with the eggs, guarding and caring for them as they develop.

If you’re lucky enough to encounter a hellbender, please give it some space.

Don’t flip or move rocks. That rock may be an active nest or simply an important retreat rock—a shelter the hellbender depends on.

Stay downstream when observing and avoid crowding the entrance to its retreat or nest.

Never touch, pick up, or chase a hellbender.

Keep your visit short. A couple of minutes is plenty. Watch, enjoy the experience, and quietly move on.

Breeding season is already a stressful and energetically demanding time. The best thing we can do is observe their natural behavior without interfering.

A Living Jewel of Our Mountain Rivers

One of my favorite fish to introduce guests to is the banded darter (Etheostoma zonale). With its bold vertical bands and vibrant colors, it’s one of the most beautiful fish you’ll find hiding among the rocks of our rivers and streams.

Unlike many fish that spend their time swimming through the water column, darters, like the banded darter is a bottom dweller. Using their large pectoral fins like tiny wings, they hop and dart from rock to rock, searching for aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates hiding among the gravel and cobble.

During the spring breeding season, males become especially striking as they defend small territories and court females. Their brilliant colors are a reminder that some of North America’s most spectacular fish aren’t found in the ocean—they’re living beneath the surface of our freshwater streams.

Every time I spot a banded darter while snorkeling, I’m reminded that our mountain rivers are home to an incredible diversity of life that most people never realize exists. All it takes is putting on a mask and looking beneath the surface.

The River’s Hidden Ambush Predator

Most people never notice the mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii), even when it’s sitting only a few inches away. Its incredible camouflage allows it to disappear against the rocks and gravel of our cold, clear mountain streams.

Rather than chasing its prey, the mottled sculpin is an ambush predator. It waits motionless on the stream bottom until an unsuspecting aquatic insect, crayfish, or small fish wanders too close. Then, in a split second, it lunges forward with a powerful burst of speed and inhales its prey before retreating back into the rocks.

Their broad, flattened heads, large fan-like pectoral fins, and mottled coloration make them perfectly adapted for life in fast-flowing water. Because they require cool, clean, well-oxygenated streams, seeing mottled sculpins is often a sign of a healthy mountain ecosystem.

On many of our snorkeling adventures, guests swim right over these fascinating little predators without ever realizing they’re there. Once you know what to look for, you’ll start seeing an entirely new world hidden beneath the surface.

River Therapy

One of my favorite things to do is spend time on the Upper French Broad River or one of its many tributaries. I’ll sit in the water in my wetsuit for a while, listening to the current and taking in the world above the surface. Then I pull my mask over my eyes, put my face in the water, and begin exploring the hidden world below. Floating effortlessly in my wetsuit with most of my body beneath the surface allows me to maneuver quietly and naturally as I float downstream or slowly crawl upstream, giving me a front-row seat to the incredible life that calls these ancient mountain waters home.

This is what I love doing with my family and friends when I’m not guiding. It’s also exactly what I love sharing with guests on our guided snorkeling adventures. Every trip reminds me why these rivers and streams continue to inspire and amaze me.
