Tangerine darters (Percina aurantiaca) began being reintroduced to the upper French Broad River watershed in Rosman in 2021, with the goal of restoring the species to streams where it had been absent for more than a century. Adult fish were moved from the Pigeon River and released into sections of the French Broad, Mills, and Swannanoa rivers as part of that effort. Here in Rosman, they appear to be doing well—we’ve even seen three in the North Fork about three miles from where they were originally stocked.

Fantail darter (Etheostoma flabellare) guarding eggs on the underside of a rock. 4/21/23. This is one of the 10 darter species in Transylvania county. This guy charged me defending his future offspring, I backed downstream and he followed under a rock in close proximity to his nesting rock. I took about 200 photos, including this one.
Check out the caddisfly cases in the background. Working on a new project I really excited about. More to come soon!

American holly, (Ilex opaca) is a native evergreen whose dense foliage and red berries offer winter food and shelter for wildlife and is a favorite of many species of birds.

We have long used its fine-grained wood for tools, and even piano keys — while its evergreen branches and berries are awesome for winter decorations.

Happy thanksgiving from our family to yours.
