Summer camp 2: wrapped.

Day 4 of camp finished on a high note for all of our campers. I can confidently say that everyone learned something new this week and took a giant leap forward in their sport development. Friends and memories were made in equal measure.

Today started off with another daily dose of gratitude. This camp didn't come together with magic - it took a lot of hard work and dedication, and an army of willing volunteers, mentors, and coaches. Thank you to ALL who played a part!

After morning meeting our luge athletes diversified their luge muscle training with rock climbing at The Notch Rock Gym at Mt Van Hoevenberg.

Bobsled athletes got some hands-on time with a bobsled, learning about the sled, its parts, and how you make it steer - the essentials! Huge thanks to Tom Church and Larry Hartson for the orientation!

Our skeleton athletes worked with Bob Hofbauer and Tom Toole to learn what to expect in an international race in terms of protocols and logistics. They also learned what to expect from a sled inspection, or what is called "materials control" so now they can double check to make sure their sleds are "race legal"!

After the morning activities we joined back up as a group for a lunch and learn with Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton athlete Kristen Bujnowski. Today's topic was the importance of good food and good sleep to optimize health and performance for athletes. Such important takeaways!

The afternoon consisted of sliding and push for all the athletes. The luge athletes went for a final wheels practice at the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex with Coach Aidan while the bobsled and skeleton athletes had one last push session in the Ice House at Mt Van Hoevenberg with Coach Larry Hartson, and current athletes Josh Williamson (USA Bobsled/Skeleton), Kristen Bujnowski (Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton), and Hannah Gaskins (USA Bobsled/Skeleton).

Photos and memories were collected throughout. They'll have to carry us through 'til we all meet again at the track this winter!

If you missed us this time, be sure to watch this page for future events and programs, especially as the winter draws near!

Closing out summer camp day 3 - are we lucky or what?

Once again, we started our day by writing thank you notes to all the coaches, athletes, and facilities that helped to make our camp possible.

After that, we went on a track walk on the actual sliding track at Mt Van Hoevenberg! Coach Aidan led all of us from Start 3 down to the finish. It poured outside, but we stayed dry under the awesome new roof. We learned a lot about what lines to take through each of the curves, and each sport learned from the others in terms of how they handle pressure. The kind in the curves, I mean.

But then after that, we learned about how to handle pressure, like the mental kind! Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton athlete Kristen Bujnowski came to lead us through a presentation and reflection activities about athlete mental wellbeing. We know that keeping our minds healthy and strong will help us to be better and more resilient athletes.

Again, we split up our groups. The luge crew headed to the Olympic Oval to check out Dmitry's Feast, a celebration in memory of Dmitry Feld who welcomed so many of us to the sliding world with open arms and big hugs. They helped Coach Aidan teach people how to slide on wheeled luge sleds, and they even got to meet 2026 USA Luge Olympian Matt Greiner!

Bobsled and skeleton athletes hit the push track again to practice starts with Coach Kenny Howard, Coach Larry Hartson, Josh Williamson and Kristen Bujnowski. Everyone has made so much progress in just these few days!

Finally, the luge group headed to the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex for more wheels... only to set up the whole course and get called off for lightning! Rather than wait out the lightning hold, we packed up shop and headed to USA Luge for starts practice instead with Coach Becky.

It was another full and fulfilling day. One more sleep, one more day of sliding adventure, and then we're off to home 'til winter!

Camp 2 Day 2 - rocked it.

We learned a ton today!

We started our day by practicing our attitude of gratitude by writing thank you cards for people who made our camp possible. Our athletes from last camp showed the new athletes the drill - how's that for teamwork!!

Next, luge athletes headed to USA Luge for starts training with Coaches Aidan and Becky, and the bobsled and skeleton athletes did sprint drills and a workout with Coach Seth.

We all gathered back at Mt Van Hoevenberg for a lunch and learn about concussion prevention and management with Janet Parcell, DPT. Among other things, we learned that after a concussion you still have to go to school... 🫩😆.

The bobsled and skeleton athletes got to have a Zoom presentation from Curt Tomasevicz from USA Bobsled/Skeleton who explained athlete selection processes and introduced the Skeleton and Bobsled Athlete Progression Pathways. Now our athletes have some concrete goals to work towards!

The luge athletes packed up to do more wheels training at the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, then they wrapped up their day with a lesson on basic sled parts and maintenance.

Our bobsled and skeleton athletes hit the ice house at Mt Van Hoevenberg again with Coach Kenny Howard and Coach Larry Hartson to practice push technique.

I know you're sad to be missing out... Be sure to follow us so you don't miss our next adventures! The winter season will be upon us before we know it.

We kicked off our second ever summer camp today! We have 22 athletes from luge, skeleton, and bobsled, over a wide range of ages and stages!

So what did today look like?
We all got together in the morning at USA Luge headquarters to talk about some of last camp's themes: setting good goals, being coachable, and practicing gratitude. We also introduced this camp's theme: Creating a welcoming environment and being a good teammate.

Our luge athletes did wheels training with Coaches Aidan Kelly, Becky Brand, and Seth Coates at the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex while our bobsled and skeleton athletes practiced pushing sleds with Coach Kenny Howard and Coach Larry Hartson on the dryland push track at USA Bobsled/Skeleton.

We met back up at Luge HQ for a lesson from coach Kenny Howard on the importance of warming up to increase short term and long term athletic success.

After lunch break, our luge athletes met back up for a workout and starts at USA Luge with Aidan, Becky, and Seth. Meanwhile, our bobsled and skeleton athletes hit the Ice House at Mt Van Hoevenberg for on-ice push training! Many thanks to push coaches - Kenny Howard, Larry Hartson, and special guest appearances from bobsleigh athlete Kristen Bujnowski and skeleton athlete Hannah Gaskins!

I think I can speak for all of us when I say we are TIRED! What a great start to camp!

Tomorrow we kick off our summer start/push season! We have weekly sessions in the Mt Van Hoevenberg Ice House for our club to practice starts.

If you ever thought it would be cool to learn how to push a bobsled, load face-first onto a skeleton sled, or paddle a luge start, you can try it with us on Tuesday evenings.

Registration is required here: https://bit.ly/pushwithslideadk

You'll need some basic gear (helmet and spikes), but we do have a limited set of equipment that can be borrowed - reach out if you'd need this!

5pm arrival for warmup, and 6-7pm (ish) in the Ice House!

Today was our last day of summer camp and it went by in (literally!) a blur. I barely took any pics, so campers, feel free to add yours in the comments!

We started off practicing that attitude of gratitude by writing a couple more thank you cards for all the folks that made it happen. (And you know, it warmed my "Coach Ali" heart to see a camper place that lesson into action too!) We also took some time to come back to those first conversations we had on day 1 about goal setting. We talked about how, in addition to setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound, we also need to discover our "WHY". Why does this goal matter? When we learn what motivates us toward our goal, we can start to build in more things in our lives that can help to fill our cup.

Today we really dug into sprinting technique in the field house at Mt Van Hoevenberg with coach Garrett Ferguson of Clarkson Athletics. Fast twitch muscles are important for all three sliding sports, so even the luge athletes worked on their sprint, power, and reflexes!

In the Ice House we dialed our coaching tech up a notch! We fired up the timing system and our new video coaching system and started to collect some benchmarks for our athletes to use as a baseline for this year's development. Josh Williamson, two time Bobsled Olympian from USA Bobsled/Skeleton, and Olympic Bobsleigh athlete Kristen Bujnowski of Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton came to work with our aspiring bobsledders. Coach Larry Hartson and Coach John Lansing too! Coach Kenny Howard from USOPC continued to build on the last three days of push skills for the Skeleton Crew.

I'm pretty sure that we sent all of our athletes home happy, healthy, smarter, stronger, and EXHAUSTED! I don't know about you, but I can't wait until our All-Stages Summer Camp 2 in August!

Whew! Another full day of summer camp in the books!

We started the day practicing an attitude of gratitude for all the amazing coaches and organizations that helped to make our camp possible.

Next, our pushers (bob and skele athletes) practiced sprint technique and drills with Garrett Ferguson of Clarkson Athletics while our luge athletes did a workout with Coach Seth.

After lunch, we sat down for a physics lesson with Coach Seth to learn a bit about curve theory as it relates to sliding... On a track walk with Coach Alex Ivanov, former Skeleton slider and current development coach at USA Bobsled/Skeleton, we really solidified those concepts and learned how to piece the curves together to build success on the track.

Finally, we divided up to practice more starts! Luge athletes worked with Coach Seth at the USA Luge HQ/Starts facility while our skele athletes pushed with Coach Kenny Howard and bobsled athletes pushed with Coach Larry Hartson at the Mt Van Hoevenberg Ice House!

It was another busy day and I bet our athletes are all blissfully tired and full of new knowledge.

There's still one more day... rest up!
