It is impossible to adequately describe the impact that this man has had on the sport of luge. After completing as an athlete in the 1988 Winter Olympics, Jon turned his focus to coaching and the technical aspects of sled building. He founded the Wasatch Luge Club and was the first person to slide down the Park City Olympic track in 1997. He has worked with an endless line of kids in the Youth Sports Alliance after school program and USA Luge Slider Searches. We have no idea how we are going to fill the void he is leaving. We of course wish him and his family all the best as he explores retirement and spends time with his family. Thank you so much for your decades of service and devotion to our sport.

Today, August 31, marks the final day with USA Luge for Jon Owen, as he officially retires and brings an incredible 30+ year career with the organization to a close.

A 1988 Olympian and 1990 National Champion, Jon has been a driving force behind the growth of luge in the western United States and the face of USA Luge in Park City since the 1990s.

From helping establish the Park City luge program and Wasatch Luge Club, to coaching and mentoring generations of athletes, Jon’s impact can be seen throughout USA Luge. His guidance helped athletes including Olympians Preston Griffall, Matt Greiner and Ashley Farquharson reach the highest levels of the sport. He also coached internationally, including serving as coach of the U.S. team at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games.

Jon was twice named USOPC Developmental Coach of the Year, contributed to the sport through leadership roles with the 2002 Olympic Bid Committee and Utah Sports Authority, and helped connect USA Luge with technical partners who advanced sled design and development.

And perhaps fittingly, Jon holds a special place in Park City history as the first athlete to slide on the Park City track in January 1997. 🛷

For more than three decades, Jon has dedicated his knowledge, passion and time to USA Luge, its athletes and the sport we all love. His contributions will continue to be felt for years to come.

Please join us in thanking Jon for an extraordinary career and wishing him all the best in retirement as he begins his next great adventure.

Thank you, Jon, for everything ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

What do our youth luge sliders do to train in the summer time? We rent a hockey rink and practice paddling with their spikes in a straight line. Being able to paddle evenly and keep the sled straight is a critical skill every athlete must learn.

While almost all of our young sliders are away training in Lake Placid, today's sliding session was left for the Masters. There's something special about watching 4 athletes enjoying some ice time without all the hustle and bustle of a throng of young kids. Today's session exuded the calm, confident, wisdom of experience. ❤️
