Originally created for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games by Patti Bellantoni, these iconic banners have been digitized in partnership with the Lake Placid Olympic Museum and reprinted on fabric for display in our lodge—bringing a piece of 1980 Olympic history back to life for today's guests and athletes.

The complete collection includes banners representing the nine winter sports featured during the 1980 Games. At Mt Van Hoevenberg, we proudly display the luge, bobsled, biathlon, and cross-country skiing banners, honoring the sports that continue to shape our venue today.

Next time you're in the lodge, take a moment to look up and experience a piece of Lake Placid's Olympic legacy.

Happy Earth Day from Mt Van Hoevenberg! We love a healthy Earth. Our recent upgrade to our refrigeration plant will make track cooling more efficient while using less energy. The instillation of programable track lighting allows us to reduce light pollution, reducing disruption of migratory birds and allowing Adirondack visitors to enjoy our spectacular nighttime skies.

In 1930, construction began on North America’s very first bobsled track on South Meadow Mountain, now known as Mt Van Hoevenberg. Built for the 1932 Olympic Winter Games, the 1.5-mile course featured 26 curves and was designed by Polish engineer Stanislaus Zentzytzki and overseen by Henry Homburger of Saranac Lake.

Following the tradition of European tracks, each curve was given a name. Whiteface, Shady, Little S, and Zig Zag soon became respected and feared curves worldwide.
