A 2-year-old child drowned in Fort Pierce on Sunday, marking the fourth drowning in the region in less than a month, as safety advocates stress the importance of survival lessons. FULL STORY โฌ‡๏ธ

It might seem okay to wrap your child in a towel to protect your car seat after a day of splashing around at the pool, but towels are a lot like puffy coats, they can create bulk and compromise your child's safety. Instead, consider changing your child before you head home or if that's not an option, make sure your child is sufficiently dried before buckling up. As long as it's not completely soaked, a slightly wet suit shouldn't impact your car seat.

Another heartbreaking reminder that drowning can happen in seconds and often happens silently.

Our hearts are with the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss in Seminole County.

Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1โ€“4, yet many of these tragedies are preventable through layers of protection:

๐Ÿ’™ Constant, undistracted supervision
๐Ÿ’™ Pool fences with self-closing, self-latching gates
๐Ÿ’™ Door and window alarms
๐Ÿ’™ Pool alarms
๐Ÿ’™ Swim lessons
๐Ÿ’™ CPR and water rescue training

If a child is missing, always check the water first.

At The Wesley Seth Foundation, we remain committed to educating families, providing water safety resources, and helping children gain access to lifesaving swim lessons.

One child lost is one too many.

Drowning is silent and only takes a minute. Layers of protection are your best defense. ๐Ÿ’™

Having one dedicated water watcher provides much more defense against drowning than you think. Don't take a chance.

Most people think drowning looks like the movies โ€” splashing, screaming, waving for help.
It doesn't.
Drowning is fast and silent. And it's the #1 cause of accidental death in children ages 1โ€“4 โ€” not car accidents, not falls. Drowning.
A child can drown in moments. In the time it took you to read this far, a child can drown. In most cases, a supervising adult was present โ€” they were just distracted or weren't expecting the child to have access to the water.
That's why active supervision โ€” eyes on the water, every second โ€” isn't just a suggestion. It's the difference.

๐Ÿ›‘ SPOILER ALERT: it's (been) time to act.

Read that statistic again: 91% of deaths in children 14 years or younger with Autism are due to drowning.

Not because families donโ€™t care...

Not because caregivers arenโ€™t trying...

And not because these children โ€œdonโ€™t know better.โ€

But because traditional water safety strategies are often not designed for children who experience the world differently.

For many neurodivergent children, water can be more than โ€œfun.โ€

It can be sensory regulation.
A special interest.
A powerful attraction.
An impulsive destination during moments of stress, dysregulation, or elopement.

And many of the behaviors that increase drowning risk are commonly misunderstood.

This is why supervision alone is not always enough.

This is why โ€œjust teach them to swimโ€ is not the full answer.

And this is exactly why we designed our FREE Adaptive Water Safety Toolkit.

Because prevention has to go beyond generic rules.
At Swim Angelfish, our toolkit focuses on:
โœ” Ritual & Routine
โœ” Monitor & Intervene
โœ” Rescue Equipment Familiarity
โœ” Understanding sensory-seeking behaviors
โœ” Layered protection strategies
โœ” Safety education designed for ALL learners

Because water safety is not one-size-fits-all.
And nowโ€ฆ weโ€™ve brought those concepts to life in a way children can actively engage with.

Our newly launched All Abilities Water Safety Activity Book was designed to make these critical safety concepts:
โœจ visual
โœจ interactive
โœจ hands-on
โœจ approachable for different learning styles

Whether youโ€™re: a parent, swim instructor, therapist, ABA provider, educator, adaptive aquatics professional, or ANY water safety-devout community memberโ€ฆ

this book was created to help turn water safety conversations into meaningful learning experiences.

Use it during:
โœ” swim lessons
โœ” ABA sessions
โœ” therapy sessions
โœ” classroom activities
โœ” home routines
โœ” community programs
โœ” water safety events

Because awareness matters.

Preparation matters.

And proactive education saves lives.

This isnโ€™t about fear, itโ€™s about prevention.

Our FREE toolkit + activity books are always available here:

Water Safety Month may be ending, but our passion for drowning prevention and adaptive water safety continues all year long.

Weโ€™re proud to partner with organizations like Stop Drowning Now to help spread lifesaving education, proactive prevention strategies, and inclusive water safety resources to families and communities everywhere. ๐Ÿ’™
