We're continuing to improve every part of Fire Wolf Self Reliance because we believe our students deserve the best training we can provide.

Over the past few weeks we've been expanding our course offerings, improving our classroom material, refining our website, adding new educational resources, and making it easier than ever to register for classes.

Our goal has never been to simply teach a class and send students on their way.

We want to build confident outdoorsmen and women who understand not only how to use a map and compass, but how to make good decisions in the field, solve problems, and continue learning long after class is over.

Whether you're completely new to land navigation or looking to build advanced wilderness skills, we're committed to providing practical, professional instruction in small classes where every student receives individual attention.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Fire Wolf Self Reliance. We're excited about what's ahead and look forward to training with you.

Looking for a Map and Compass Course Near You?
Have you searched Google for a map and compass course near me?
At Fire Wolf Self Reliance, we don't believe the goal is simply to teach people how to follow a compass.
Our goal is to help students develop the confidence to make sound decisions when they're away from marked trails and GPS isn't an option.
Through classroom instruction and guided field exercises, you'll learn how to:
• Navigate with greater confidence
• Understand the terrain around you
• Plan routes before you leave
• Recognize natural features that help keep you on course
• Build practical outdoor skills through real experience
Every class is limited to just six students, allowing plenty of personal instruction and hands-on practice.
If you're ready to become more confident in the outdoors, we'd love to train with you.

The Most Dangerous Thing You Carry Into the Wilderness Isn't in Your Backpack
After years of teaching land navigation and wilderness survival, I've become convinced that most outdoor emergencies don't begin with a lack of equipment.
They begin with human decisions.
Fear.
Stress.
Fatigue.
Overconfidence.
These human factors quietly influence our choices long before an emergency develops.
I've launched a new educational series called Human Factors in the Outdoors, where I'll be exploring the psychology behind wilderness emergencies through documented case studies, Search and Rescue research, and practical outdoor experience.
One principle will guide every article:
If we can't verify it, we don't publish it.
If you enjoy hiking, backpacking, hunting, camping, overlanding, or simply spending time outdoors, I'd love for you to read the first article and join the discussion.

Question for you:
What do you believe is the most important human factor in a wilderness emergency?

Could You Find Your Way If Your GPS Failed Today?
Most people trust their phone or GPS every time they head outdoors.
But batteries die.
Signals disappear.
Electronics fail.
Would you know how to get home with nothing more than a map and compass?
At Fire Wolf Self Reliance, you'll learn practical land navigation through hands-on classroom instruction and real field exercises in the Kern River Valley.
No experience required.
Small classes.
Maximum of six students.

Your Water Filter Is Only Part of the Solution
Post
When most people think about safe drinking water in the wilderness, they think about buying a water filter.
Experienced outdoorsmen know there's more to it than that.
This is the water treatment kit I personally carry in the field.
It includes a Millbank Bag (pre-filter), Sawyer Mini water filter, stainless steel nesting bottle and cup, and 2% iodine tincture.
The Millbank Bag is what I like to call a "filter saver." It removes sediment and debris before water reaches my filter, helping improve performance and reduce clogging.
The Sawyer Mini is my primary filtration system.
The stainless steel nesting bottle and cup provide a dependable backup, allowing me to boil water if my filter becomes unusable.
I also carry 2% iodine tincture as an additional treatment option.
One thing I emphasize in every Fire Wolf Self Reliance course is redundancy.
Don't rely on one piece of equipment.
Understand your equipment.
Practice with it.
Always have a backup plan.
Knowledge is the most valuable tool you'll ever carry into the wilderness.

Confidence Begins Before You Hit the Trail
The outdoors has a way of teaching us important lessons. One of the biggest is that confidence doesn't come from carrying more gear—it comes from knowing what to do.
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching someone who has never used a map and compass before finish the day navigating with confidence. Seeing that transformation reminds me why I started Fire Wolf Self Reliance.
Every class is about more than finding your way. It's about building confidence, making good decisions, and developing skills you can rely on for years to come.
If you've ever wanted to learn traditional land navigation, I'd love the opportunity to help.

Handrails & Backstops: Two Simple Skills That Can Transform the Way You Navigate
When most people think about land navigation, they picture someone staring at a compass while trying to follow a straight line through the woods.
Experienced navigators know there's a better way.
Instead of relying only on a compass, they use the landscape itself.
A trail can become a handrail, naturally guiding them toward their destination.
A river beyond their objective can become a backstop, letting them know immediately if they've travelled too far.
These terrain association techniques make navigation easier, safer, and more accurate while reducing stress in unfamiliar terrain.
At Fire Wolf Self Reliance, we teach these practical skills during our Module 1: Basic Land Navigation course through classroom instruction and guided field exercises.
Whether you're a hiker, hunter, backpacker, or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, understanding handrails and backstops can make every adventure more enjoyable and more confident.
Have you ever used natural terrain features to help you navigate? We'd love to hear about your experience in the comments.
