Could you find your way home if your phone stopped working?

GPS is a great tool, but batteries die, signals fail, and electronics break. Knowing how to use a map and compass gives you a reliable backup that works anywhere.

Our Module 1: Basic Land Navigation course teaches students how to:

• Read topographic maps
• Use a sighting mirror compass
• Navigate using bearings and back bearings
• Understand terrain features and terrain association
• Use UTM coordinates and grid systems
• Build confidence traveling in unfamiliar terrain

This hands-on course combines classroom instruction with practical field exercises to help students develop real-world navigation skills.

Our next Module 1 class is July 11, 2026. A limited number of seats are still available.

Many people think wilderness navigation is all about following a compass bearing.

In reality, some of the best navigators spend more time observing the terrain around them than looking at their compass.

Terrain association is the practice of matching features on a map to features on the ground. Ridgelines, drainages, hills, roads, fences, and other landmarks can help confirm your location and guide your movement.

When you learn to read the landscape, navigation becomes less about guessing and more about understanding where you are at all times.

This is one of the foundational skills taught during our Module 1: Basic Land Navigation course. Students learn how to identify terrain features, relate them to a topographic map, and use the landscape itself as a navigation aid.

Good navigation is not just knowing where you are going. It is knowing where you are every step of the way.

When most people think about wilderness survival, they picture dramatic scenarios from television. In reality, survival is often about mastering simple skills before you ever need them.

Can you create a weather-resistant shelter?

Can you safely collect and purify water?

Can you start a fire when conditions aren't ideal?

Can you signal for help if an emergency occurs?

These are practical skills that can be learned, practiced, and improved through hands-on training.

Our upcoming Module 2 Basic Wilderness Survival Course covers shelter construction, firecraft, water procurement and purification, emergency signaling, cutting tool safety, knots and lashings, and other core field skills in a real outdoor environment.

Upcoming Class:
July 18–19, 2026

Think wilderness survival is all about building shelters and starting fires?
In California summers, one of the biggest threats outdoors is actually heat and dehydration.
Understanding how to recognize the early signs of heat exhaustion, manage your water intake, pace your activity, and use shade effectively can make the difference between a safe day outdoors and a serious emergency.
At Fire Wolf Self Reliance, we teach practical outdoor skills designed for real-world conditions, including how to prepare for and operate safely in hot-weather environments.
Whether you're hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, or simply exploring the outdoors, knowledge is one of the most important pieces of gear you can carry.
Stay safe, stay hydrated, and keep learning.

One of the most valuable outdoor skills isn't fire building or shelter construction—it's knowing exactly where you are and how to get where you need to go.

In our Basic Land Navigation course, students learn how to read topographic maps, use a compass correctly, understand terrain features, and navigate with confidence without relying on electronics.

GPS devices and phones are useful tools, but batteries fail, signals disappear, and technology can break. A map, compass, and the knowledge to use them remain reliable under almost any conditions.

Whether you enjoy hiking, hunting, overlanding, backpacking, or simply want to become more self-reliant, learning land navigation is a skill that can benefit you for a lifetime.
