Has anyone found any sheds yet? Yesterday while consulting on a property in Ohio for these two young whitetail hunters, they found this shed in one of their food plots. I am sure that most of the antlers are still on the heads of the bucks that grew them but we have found 3 so far on my consulting visits.

I have this spot.

Today I took a little stroll back in time down memory lane. Imagine if you will it is November of 1978 and you are a 15 year old kid eagerly striving to kill your first deer. Your are sitting on the ground on public land as the sun rises on that chilly morning. It is your second deer hunting season and you have yet to even see a deer while hunting. Across your lap rests your grandpa’s Re*****on 12-gauge loaded with slugs. There on the slight rise in front of you is a lone cedar tree amongst the others with a buck rub on it. Soon it is fully daylight and movement catches your eye. A nice 8-point buck strolls up the slight rise right towards the rub you are guarding. He catches your movement as you raise the gun to take his life. The hurried shot sends him fleeing and your heart sinking. You had your chance and blew it. Your first encounter with a whitetail while hunting and this time the whitetail won.

I was that 15 year old kid and today I returned to the spot I hadn’t been to in over 20 years. I sat right in the same spot I sat in over 40 years ago on that fateful hunt and snapped this photo of the rise the buck walked down towards that rubbed cedar which no longer exists. Time has healed the disappointment I felt that morning so long ago and in the decades since the whitetail has come out on top of our chess matches way more than I have.

It was good to sit there for a bit today and reflect on the morning from my youth that I will never forget while thanking God that I had a dad who always made time to take me deer hunting. I don’t think either of us could have ever dreamed where that passion would one day take me. Today was a good day.
