We are very sad to share the news that the President of the Amateur Athletic Union passed away last week.

Dr. Roger Goudy was a huge presence in youth sports, and his kindness was unmatched.

On a chilly February Sunday in 2018, I emailed Dr. Goudy to ask him if AAU might be interested in adding Rhythmic Gymnastics to their impressive list of sports. Within an hour, he emailed me back, arranging a phone call for that very evening. I was floored-- I'd never expected such a quick answer, and from that moment on, I was impressed with AAU.

We chatted for an hour over the phone, and he arranged for me to fly to Florida later that spring during the massive AAU Volleyball Nationals to present the sport of RG to their staff.

From the moment I stepped off the plane and arrived in Orlando, I was welcomed to AAU with such warmth that I remember it to this day. Dr. Goudy spared no expense making me feel like not only I, but Rhythmic Gymnastics, was already a part of the AAU family. I attended a VIP dinner that evening to watch the Volleyball Opening Ceremonies, and he made sure to introduce me to every single person in the room, from Disney executives to volleyball officials to the reigning American Idol winner to his wonderful, warm family that were at the ESPN Wide World of Sports to help run the 45,000 athlete tournament. His son Brian showed me around the stadium so I could meet all the officials and volunteers, and it was so impressive to me how this organization was so massive yet SO friendly.

The following year at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, Dr. Goudy made sure to come find our Rhythmic Gymnastics competition, say hello to the judges, and watch some of the event, even during what must have been a hugely busy, jam-packed schedule.

Dr. Goudy made sure that I felt welcome and accepted in such a larger-than-life environment, and showed such an interest in our small sport of Rhythmic Gymnastics in a way that I'll never forget.

I'll always remember what he told me: "Every sport matters here, no matter how small. Welcome to the family."

Dr. Goudy, thank you for not only believing in our little sport, but instantly believing that we could do this. We couldn't have made it happen without you. Rest in peace.

AAU membership registers you to compete AND covers you for insurance during all classes and sanctioned events!

To register a gymnast:

1) Go to aausports.org
2) Click on "Join AAU."
3) Click on "Get a Membership."
4) Choose Youth Membership" for those under 18, and "Adult membership" for those over 18.
5) Select "Rhythmic Gymnastics" as your sport.
6) Pick which insurance coverage you want for your gymnast (extended coverage covers you when competing for other organizations)
7) Fill out the form!

To register a club:

1) Go to aausports.org
2) Click on "Join AAU."
3) Click on "Start a Club." There are 3 different participation levels to choose from.
4) Select which Level club you want to join.
5) Fill out the form!

The AAU was founded on January 21, 1888, with the goal of creating common standards in amateur sport. Massive AAU Junior Olympic Games is potentially moving from Virginia to Florida this summer due to Covid-19:

Brevard County, Florida is stretching out toward the finish line and hoping to land a big coup this week, as the county has made a bid for the 2020 AAU Junior Olympic Games following the organization\'s move from its scheduled host site in Hampton, Virginia.
