This is hard for me to share…

Last week I had a breakdown.

Driving home from the gym, I broke into tears.

2024 has been hard.

And last week it all felt like it came to a head.

→ 2 clients backing out after committing to coaching.
→ The pressure of trying to manage a team effectively.
→ I feel like I’ve had a year’s worth of work stress in just 3 months.
→ Not to mention the constant financial stress of running a small business.

I’m exhausted.

Everything feels like it’s 1 step forward, 3 steps back.

As someone who has struggled with depression, it’s been a scary time.

So as I was trying to come up with any positives…

I realize there’s been one saving grace…

My health.

→ I’m sleeping better than I have in several years.
→ As a result, my energy levels are sky-high.
→ And my gym performance is great.

As hard as 2024 has been so far…

I have not let that stop me from taking care of myself.

Because here’s the thing…

When going through trying, difficult, or downright sucky times…

This is when you NEED to prioritize your health and fitness the most.

How you take care of yourself directly influences your ability to take care of everything else.

Eating well, exercising, and prioritizing sleep make your body more resilient to stress.

Being more resilient to stress reduces the effects stress has on your body.

The less stress you feel, the better you’re going to feel physically and mentally.

That doesn’t mean you aren’t going to have…

→ Days you feel awful.
→ Post-gym breakdowns.
→ Chocolate chip cookies for dinner.

You’re still going to have bad days and weeks...

But what makes them worse?

Too many people completely abandon their health and fitness during this time…

When the reality is, as hard as it can feel, doubling down on healthy habits makes these periods of life easier.

→ The best tool business leaders and high-performers have isn’t their brain.
→ It isn’t their network or having a big LinkedIn following.
→ It isn’t how much money they have.

It’s their health.

Because the better you take care of yourself…

The better you’re able to take care of everything else.

Here’s how I accidentally lost 100 pounds.

And kept it off for over a decade.

After I graduated college and moved back home, in my free time I would hang out at the local YMCA.

→ I had no intentions of exercising.
→ At first, I would just use the sauna and hot tub.
→ But the more I hung out, I figured why the hell not.
→ I’m here, I may as well do something to be active, right?

So I’d hop on some cardio equipment and BS with the other guys for an hour.

I started doing this every day.

First for a few weeks → Then a few months.

And after a while, I thought to myself:

“Wow, I’ve been working out almost every day! I should step on the scale.”

And much to my surprise, I was down over 20 pounds!

The rest, as they say, was history.

I didn’t realize it until years later, but I had accidentally discovered the secret to permanent weight loss.

Because here’s the common issue people run into when they try to lose weight:

→ They focus TOO much on losing weight.

They get the idea in their heads of something like: “I HAVE to lose 20 pounds in 4 months.”

And this becomes their sole focus.

They tie their success to this one outcome.

And inevitably, when things don’t go according to plan…

→ They get frustrated.
→ They take extreme actions.
→ Which are almost always unsustainable.
→ And in turn, makes them even more frustrated.
→ To the point where they just eventually give up altogether.

Now, I’m not saying weight loss is a bad thing.

But it’s a lot easier to lose weight when you focus on the actions you need to take that will help you become a better, fitter, healthier, high-performing human.

Rather than obsessing about the scale.

Did you know…

→ Poor health accounts for a 40% loss in income over the course of your life.

When it comes to investing in their health, most people think…

‘I can’t afford it...’

But the question they should be asking:

‘Can you really afford NOT TO?’

The reality is, the money you would choose not to invest in coaching is going to get spent anyway.

→ The cost of poor health is significantly higher than the cost of good health.
→ We just don’t realize it because it all just doesn’t get spent all at once.
→ But rather, slowly leaks out over the course of years and decades.
→ And can add up to hundreds of thousands lost in your lifetime.
→ From lost wages, sales, less to invest, higher expenses.
→ Not to mention a lower quality of life.

At what point does spending a fraction of that ON your health become worth it?

Now, I’m not saying everyone needs a coach to succeed in bettering their health.

A quick story about how donuts helped me lose over 100 pounds…

Growing up, we had this old-school, mom-and-pop donut place in town.

Almost every Saturday my dad would stop there and get us our favorites:

Double chocolate and nutter butter!

Even after I moved away, every time I came home to visit, I would stop at this place. Because...

→ Over 30 years, the donuts never changed.
→ You could always count on them tasting great.
→ And to this day, these were the best donuts I ever had.

Why?

They had mastered the Basics.

→ The donuts were no-frills.
→ They just had the process mastered.
→ Then repeated it - every day - for decades.
→ Nothing crazy or fancy like many places try to do today.

And if you’re a business leader, struggling to lose weight.

Who can’t make it through the day without an IV drip of caffeine.

And knows they’re not operating as the best version of themselves.

You could take a lesson from this donut place.

→ Most struggle with health because suffer from shiny object syndrome.
→ Always chasing the next fad diet, popular workout, and detox.
→ Or whatever other nonsense is out there.

And they never get really good at implementing the basic, big rocks of health.

→ Because, while yes, results can be hard to come by.
→ They’re made harder when people overlook the simple things.
→ In favor of things harder and more complex - which are rarely sustainable.

But when you have the right process and accountability in place, simple works.

And it works damn well.

March Madness is finally here! But not the one you’re thinking…

March has always been one of my favorite months of the year.

And no, not just because it’s my girlfriend’s birthday. Sorry, Nicole Haydt.

Growing up in the Midwest, March was always the month when it felt like the chill of winter was finally ending.

The days were longer, the sun was warmer…

Here’s what the Super Bowl can teach you about weight loss…

Yesterday’s game was pretty ugly for 2.5 quarters

↳ Almost always sure-handed McCaffrey fumbles on the first drive.

↳ Pacheco fumbles in the Red Zone early in the 2nd quarter.

↳ Mahomes throws an INT coming out of halftime.

↳ SF fumbles a punt leading to a KC TD.

It was on track to be one of the uglier Super Bowls in recent memory.

But late in the game, things settled in…

SF and KC started trading blows like we thought they would.

And we ended up with one of the most exciting endings to a Super Bowl ever.

Because in the face of adversity, both teams stayed focused on executing their plan and doing their jobs.

This is the same approach you need to take with your weight loss.

The first few days, weeks, or even months, things can be pretty rocky.

Hell, they’ll likely be downright ugly at times.

↳ You’ll end up missing a couple workouts.

↳ You’re going to struggle to stick to your nutrition.

↳ The scale’s not gonna go down every day or even week.

↳ You’re going to get frustrated and feel like your game plan isn’t working.

But…

→ You have to stick with it.

The biggest mistake people make when it comes to losing weight and improving their health?

Giving up in the 3rd quarter.

When there’s still a lot of game left to play.

Instead:

→ Stick to the game plan.

→ Focus on executing each day.

→ Don’t give up while there’s still time left on the clock.

That’s how you win your weight loss Super Bowl.
