Today we’re at the Mental Health Walk at BYU-Hawaii, and it’s so encouraging to see so many turn out to support individuals and families with mental health. It’s good to talk openly about mental health, seek support, help, therapy, meds, treatment, education, skill building, lifestyle changes, and all the things that help foster emotional and mental well-being on a personal, family, and community basis. We’re glad to be a part of this! 👟👟🚶🏻‍♀️🚶🏻🧠🏆🌴🐠🍍

May has been Mental Health Awareness month, and we’re so happy for the way that individuals and families are getting more comfortable talking about mental health, sharing their stories and getting support and help from friends, family and community.

Honestly, the shame or embarrassment about mental illness only prolongs the misery, because treatment in the forms of therapy, meds, case management, programs, behavior therapy, learning skills and ways to cope, self acceptance and getting support from educational or peer support groups, makes living with mental illness SO MUCH EASIER.

Never stay ashamed of having mental illness or knowing someone with it. If that’s where you have been or are currently, know that overcoming stigma, shame and embarrassment are very possible and we are here to support you! 😊

Here today at the Mental Health Fair, which we heard about from our friends at the Friends of Ko'olau Clubhouse, a super cool local nonprofit supporting individuals with mental illness. So much education, support and great community initiatives to reduce stigma, provide opportunity, health care, insurance, providers, and other necessities for our local families navigating mental health. Thankful for all the love and aloha in this community! 🌺

It’s still MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH. If you have an illness you are not alone. 1 in 5 people have a mental health condition. Let’s break it down:

Major depressive disorder - 21 million
Schizophrenia - 1.5 million
Bipolar - 7 million
Anxiety Disorders - 48 million people
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - 9 million people
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - 3 million people
Borderline Personality Disorder - 3.5 million people

Let’s give each other a great big bear hug, especially big for those who may be struggling.

The best thing a parent or caretaker can do is to make sure that any early symptoms are treated professionally.
