Lahaina Ki Aikido

Lahaina Ki Aikido Lahaina Ki Aikido is part of the Honolulu Ki Society. Our goal is to bring the martial art of Ki-Aikido and Ki Principles to the community of Lahaina, Hawaii.

Lahaina Ki-Aikido is an Aikido dojo of the Honolulu Ki Society, led by Ed Johnson Sensei, Shodan of the Honolulu Ki Society. Students will learn: calmness & confidence; to be relaxed yet strong; meditation & breathing; discipline & tradition; martial arts & self defense; mind & body coordination. Aikido is a Japanese martial art originally developed by Morihei Usehiba in the late 1920s that practi

tioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting the attacker from injury. Aikido techniques consist of entering and turning movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent’s attack, and a throw or joint lock that terminates the technique (source: Wikipedia). The art is directly descended from the Samurai martial art of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, which is over 900 years old. Ki-Aikido is a style of Aikido founded by Master Koichi Tohei (Usehiba Sensei’s top student) that blends Aikido with mind & body coordination techniques descended from ancient Zazen (Zen) and Misogi training. The Ki Society is an Aikido martial art organization founded by Master Koichi Tohei in 1971 while he was the top worldwide Aikido instructor (and 10th Dan) in Japan. The Honolulu Ki Society and it’s affiliated Northwest Ki Federation encompasses dozens of dojos with locations in California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Canada, Great Britain and the Czech Republic. The Northwest Ki Federation was founded by and is currently led by Calvin Tabata Sensei, 8th Dan and direct student of Koichi Tohei. Ki Society dojos focus on spreading Ki Principles and Tohei Sensei’s style of Aikido known as Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (Aikido with Mind & Body Coordinated). The Ki Society also offers students the chance to study other forms of training, such as Kiatsu, Ki Health Exercises, Ki Meditation, Ki Breathing and Misogi. These additional training opportunities combined with Tohei Sensei’s Aikido provide students with a holistic approach to life that extends beyond the martial art of Aikido into something which can be incorporated into our daily lives for improved health and happiness. Lahaina Ki-Aikido offers Beginners Adult & Children’s classes, Free Intro Classes and Regular Ki & Aikido Classes on Monday & Wednesday nights: Kids 6pm-7pm, Adults 7pm-9pm. It is currently operating from the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission in Lahaina, Hawaii. We hope to improve the lives of our students by helping you to create a happy, healthy, and productive life. Our training is incremental. Like drops of water added to a cup of tea, the small things we do repeatedly change the fabric of our lives. In class, we learn the correct use of mind and body. With this knowledge, we monitor and correct our actions in everyday life. As our habits evolve, so does our life.

Please send your plus Ki to all the residents of Lahaina. The fire has devastated the community, destroyed lives and livelihoods, and many irreplaceable historic buildings in the town.
If you can help, please find a way to donate to a fundraiser.
We thank the longtime generosity of the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission and it's community for the years of support. Our sorrow in the loss of the buildings is great, and we are sending plus Ki to the continued safety of all of the members and Reverend Hironaka and family.

Again, if you can help, please find a way.

Thank you and be safe.

We were presented two photographs showing the 1958 & 1959 Lahaina Hongwanji Aikido Club.

In one of them is a 5 year old Tabata Sensei, along with most of the Maui Tabata family. Also Suzuki Sensei, and of course Tohei Sensei.

A great slice of Lahaina Aikido history.
