Now with mask restrictions loosening and covid regulations leaving, what is everyone going to do for their fitness regimen? If you're like me, you switched a couple things up, but now I find myself staying with same patterns I had during covid.

Are you keeping the same fitness routine you did during the peak of covid, or are you going back to pre-covid routines, or do you have entire new plan that you plan to follow?

I want to give an update on my personal fitness and body composition measurements that I've been able to keep track of since the lockdown. With little equipment, my training has been shifted, but I wanted to see what shift would occur with the change in weekly training. I hope my results can show how results can be made no matter what the circumstances including not having access to the gym.

* I want to make sure everyone knows that the only equipment I currently have is a TRX and a bucket with books that weighs about 35 pounds.*

Results since 1st Covid Lockdown
Body Composition
Since the lockdown, I've lost a total of 7 pounds. Started at 171 and I'm now at 164 pounds. I measured my waist, previously I was estimated at around 32 inches, but I'm now estimated at around 29.5 inches. My arm and leg size haven't changed that much, but both dropped by barely .25 inches.

Performance

I've included daily running (2 long runs ([6,8,10, and 12 miles] , 1 hill repeats[35 minutes] , and 1 tempo [5k,10k]) into my routine. This has increased my daily volume of activity, which explains the lower bodyweight and the reason to up calories by from 2,900kcal to 3,900kcal per day.

My strength and muscle mass more than likely has dropped, due to not having access to the same weights and not training at a higher intensity resistance; however, my relative strength including pushups and pull ups, and overall mobility have both improved.

Conclusion
I wanted to show my results to be a showing of how improvements can be made even during times of having to change your routine. Although I don't have access to weights and can't focus on my developing my total strength of what I can lift, I still can improve on my relative strength and mastering my bodyweight. There are no excuses why you can't still see amazing results right now so keep being active and stay strong!

I think this article is both eye opening and very confusing. First, it says that people are considering at-home workouts to be effective or better than they expected.

My question: What were people expecting? Having a successful training program that gives you better results is determined by two key factors: volume and intensity. I'm not saying that it's easy to set-up a gym at home, but during this time, focusing on bodyweight training, TRX training, etc. can bring a significant level of muscle mass growth, strength improvement, etc. Of course it won't be the same as going to a gym with many options of weights, but for the time, of course it's effective.

I think the main premise of this article is to show how people are seeing that you don't have to go to a gym 4-5 days a week to get into shape. Everyone has a different goal. You may have a goal to be stronger and when gyms open back up, you may need to go to a gym in the future. Just because workouts are limited to being at home, it doesn't mean you can't have great workouts and create new goals.

New Goal Ideas:

Bench Press 225 pounds: Instead do 225 Pushups as quickly as possible. Improve on your time!

Squat 300 pounds: Instead be able to a 1 leg pistol Squat 30 times on each leg

Deadlift 400 pounds: Instead be able to do 20 slow nordic hamstring curls

What do you think of wearing a mask while exercising? As gyms open back up, you will have to wear one, but here are some helpful tips to make the experience a smoother transition:

1. Don't overdo it, if possible, do conditioning outside
2. Take frequent breaks to catch your breath, you are taking in less oxygen, while wearing a mask, give yourself time!
3. Only go to the gym for resistance training, limit high-intensity conditioning: treadmills, stairmasters, ellipticals, etc.
4. If you feel dizzy, light-headed, or out of breath, stop right away and go outside and focus on breathing!

With a number of states requiring face masks in public, some may be wondering: is it safe to wear a mask while working out?

A great paper looking at the effects of aerobic endurance exercise vs resistance circuit training on diabetes. Aerobics is often viewed as being the superior form of exercise for diabetes treatment, due to the relationship with weight loss. Although aerobics can improve Vo2Max and lipid panels (such as higher HDL) a major factor that diabetics need to be aware of is improving insulin sensitivity, or the ability to require little or no insulin to metabolize sugar. Resistance training has the ability to improve insulin sensitivity and should be viewed as essential as aerobics for improving blood sugar levels.

During this time, the news is flooded with stories of how cases of COVID-19 are increasing; however, instruction on how to improve the battle is limited. It seems the news never talks about how diet, exercise, taking vitamins, proper sleep, stress-control, etc. can all have potential benefits in a stronger immune system. We rely on the ability of the immune system to battle conflicts, but taking as much care into our general health could be the greatest thing we can control and improve on right now. Please wear a mask if your in a public place, if your sick don't go out in crowded areas, but also work on areas in which you can build your general health. Get enough sleep that makes you energized, eat a diet rich in micronutrients, fiber, etc., exercise to keep your heart and muscles strong, and control stress levels to maintain mental strength.

*Attached is an article discussing how nutrition can be one step in in the battle against COVID-19.

With so many people falling ill from COVID-19, unhealthy diets are contributing to pre-existing conditions that put them more at risk.
