Seishinkan Aiki Budo - Seishinkan Combat Systems

Seishinkan Aiki Budo - Seishinkan Combat Systems At Seishinkan Aiki Budo/Seishinkan Combat Systems we strive to put modern application in classical budo expression through conceptual principals.

With over 30 years of Law Enforcement Control Tactics and Combatives experience, Seishinkan Aiki Budo teaches traditional Aiki Jujutsu techniques and philosophy with an emphasis on modern applications. Our techniques are drawn from Modern Aikido, O Sensei's Pre-1938 Aiki Budo catalog, Daito Ryu Jujutsu, Nihon Taihojutsu, and Sentou Ryu Aiki Jujutsu. We explore the 4 levels of application: Jujutsu,

Jujutsu with aiki format, Aikijujutsu and Aiki no jujutsu. Techniques are practiced Tachi Waza, Suwari Waza, and Hamni Handachi Waza. In addition we work on utilization of Jo, Tessen, Boken, and Tanto into our curriculum. Modern weapons retention and disarms are also explored in addition to using technique in modern settings such as car seats. Excellent commentary by my friend Manny Castillo Sensei. Hit the nail on the head with this one as I have known and trained with some Jim Jones cult like teachers.

“PLACING YOUR TEACHERS ON A PEDESTAL

A responsible leader or teacher will want to rip down any pedestal that you place them upon. Beware the teacher that seems overly gratified with attention that overcompensates and empowers the egocentric self.

Within the traditional martial arts, I know people that have their teachers on such a pedestal, that they develop a cult of personality. Be careful of the teacher that finds great solace in that situation. It is not emotionally healthy.

When your training becomes their ego feeding nutrition, the benefits of your study will suffer, you can be abused, and they are actually very unhealthy for allowing it, and even more emotionally and mentally unstable for needing it.

BY PLACING YOUR TEACHERS AND LEADERSHIP UP ON SUCH A PEDESTAL, YOU ARE HARMING THEIR OWN ABILITY TO HAVE CLARITY, TO DEVELOP EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, AND YOU ARE EMPOWERING POTENTIALLY DAMAGING ABUSE IN THE FUTURE.”

The dojo, a place of learning and discipline, is not just a place where students hone their physical skills. It is also a melting pot where timeless philosophies are forged, tested, and internalized. These teachings, while rooted in battle, offer profound insights that can be applied to the myriad challenges we face in our daily lives.

1. The importance of discipline and consistency

In martial arts, progress is achieved through consistent practice and unwavering discipline. Similarly, in life, whether we are pursuing a new skill, a career goal, or personal growth, consistency is key. It's not about the intensity of a single effort, but about the cumulative effect of small, daily actions.

2. Embracing failure as a teacher

Every student, regardless of their level, has faced defeat. But it's in those moments of retrogress that true learning happens. Life is also full of challenges and failures. Instead of fearing them, we can view them as invaluable lessons, guiding us towards growth and improvement.

3. The Power of Adaptability

In the ring or the mat, the situation is fluid. A successful martial artist learns to adapt, change strategies, and think on his own feet. The journey of life is equally unpredictable. Accepting change, being flexible in our approach, and adapting to new conditions can help us navigate the ups and downs of life.

4. Respect to all

One of the fundamental principles of martial arts is respect - for the teacher, for the opponent, and for himself. This respect translates into life teaching us the value of empathy, understanding, and recognition of the inherent worth of each person we meet.

5. The pursuit of balance

As discussed in the Yin and Yang of the war branches, balance is vital. Similarly, in life, finding a balance between work and rest, giving and receiving or speaking and listening can lead to a harmonious existence.

6. Attention and presence

Martial arts requires an increased sense of awareness - of the body, opponent, and the environment. This mindfulness, when applied to our daily lives, can enhance our experiences, relationships, and overall well-being. It teaches us to be present, live in the moment and appreciate the now.

In a nutshell

The dojo is more than four walls where combat techniques are taught. It is a school of life, imparting wisdom that extends far beyond physical skills. As we navigate the challenges of our daily existence, philosophies and lessons from martial arts can serve as guiding principles, helping us live more fulfilling, balanced, and meaningful lives.
