🏀 Everybody wants to work on their “bag”. Who's working on defensive positioning and getting stops?

A lot of basketball training revolves around offense—ball handling, shooting, finishing, creating space, etc.
Those skills matter. But that’s only half the game.

At Train to Perform, the goal isn't to create players who are only dangerous with the ball in their hands. It's to develop complete basketball players.

That means learning how to defend.

🛑 Proper positioning and angles
🗣️ Communication
👀 Reading the offense
👟 Defensive footwork
🧠 Understanding help-side responsibilities
💪 Competing without taking possessions off

In this session, Isaac Loechle takes time to teach the principles behind the defense positioning, helping athletes understand not only what they're supposed to do, but why they're doing it.

Because when school season arrives, coaches aren't only looking for who can score.

Can you defend? Are you in the right defensive position? Do you communicate? Do you understand the game? Can your coach trust you on both ends of the floor?

Train the skills. Learn the game. Become a complete player.

That's Train to Perform. 🏀

🏀 Isaac Loechle with Train to Perform breaking down one of his favorite live finishing drills. This simulates defense sliding over in a game to help develop offensive decision-making.

Wing Attack 1-on-1 Live Finishing

🔹 How it works:
• Two players start on opposite sides on each block.
• The offensive player dribbles out to the nearest wing and attacks around a chair downhill.
• At the same time, the defender sprints to the opposite wing, around the chair to simulate them sliding over into help.
• Once the offensive player turns the corner, it's LIVE. The offense attacks the rim while the defender races to contest the finish.

🏀 Why this drill is effective:
✅ Develops decision making
✅ Teaches players to finish at game speed against live pressure
✅ Improves body control and finishing through contact
✅ Builds defensive recovery, closeout angles, and effort
✅ Simulates real-game transition finishes

The best part? Both players are getting quality game reps every possession—offensive players learn to finish at the second line of defense, while defenders develop the discipline to recover and contest without fouling.

Isaac Loechle with Train to Perform breaking down Mid-Range Sn**ch Pull-Up. A great move to create separation and get to a controlled shot off the dribble. 🏀

Start at the wing behind the three-point line with a chair representing the defender. Attack the chair toward the baseline selling the drive with speed going downhill. Once you get the defender moving toward the basket, quickly stop your momentum and create separation using one of three options:
🏀 Sn**ch dribble
🏀 Quick behind-the-back dribble
🏀 Punch dribble

After creating space, stay balanced, get your feet underneath you and rise into a mid-range pull-up.

This drill teaches players how to change pace, stop under control and use different dribble moves to create space from a defender. It also helps develop balance and footwork when transitioning from a hard drive into a pull-up jumper. In a game, that mid-range area can be available before the help defense fully rotates, helping players to be able to score from all 3 levels.

Practice the move from both wings and work on all three variations!

Save this video so you can practice it later, and share it with your teammates and coaches! 🔥

🏀 Kobe Bryant made a career out of his impeccable footwork and creating space when defenders thought they had him stopped.

Watch Isaac Loechle break it down at Train to Perform! This reverse pivot is a great way to develop footwork, balance, and a finishing move to add to your arsenal.

🔸 How to do it:• Start on the wing with a chair acting as your defender.• Attack with a jab series to sell your first move.• Drive hard to the middle (or baseline on the opposite side).• Come to a controlled jump stop on two feet.• Execute a reverse pivot, keeping your pivot foot planted while using your body to shield the defender.• Finish strong at the rim.

💡 Why it works:✅ Teaches players to stop under control instead of rushing into bad shots.✅ Improves footwork and balance in traffic.✅ Creates separation from defenders using your body, not just speed.✅ Develops scoring options when the initial drive is cut off.✅ Builds confidence finishing from multiple angles with either hand.

The reverse pivot was one of Kobe Bryant's signature scoring techniques because it allowed him to stay balanced, protect the basketball, and create a clean path to the basket even against elite defenders.

Master the footwork first. The speed will come naturally.

📌 Save this drill to add to your next workout.📤 Share it with a teammate or coach.🎥 If you try it, tag us in your story or reel—we'd love to see your footwork in action!
