It is a sad day as we say farewell to an American icon. Most people never realized that she always traveled with a gun for protection and that she successfully defended herself and Judy Ogle in New York when two men were harassing them in the late 60s (when she was in her early 20s).
If she wasn't carrying that night, we may have never been blessed with her talent and charity works -- Tactical Rose

Stop giving women bad advice!

A restraining order doesn’t fix everything, but that doesn’t mean you should skip it if you are being abused or stalked.

But a gun doesn’t fix everything either. Security works in layers. The gun is a layer. The court protection order is a layer.

The notion that a restraining order is just a piece of paper is a slogan (meant to illustrate that is a fallible layer), not a security prescription.

But in our experience, telling someone to “just get a restraining order!” Also doesn’t help. You may need to help them follow through. You may need to go with them to the court house.

Well meaning people tend to give terrible advice to women who have serious safety concerns. We started this Tactical Tangents project largely to bust myths that put people in danger. We found the problem often wasn't just the myth itself (like wasp spray as a self defense tool), but the attitude of telling a sister/spouse/friend: "Just do X" like you are checking a box that magically makes you safe.

Security, whether we are talking about a woman walking through a dark parking lot, or air base ground defense, is about layers. We want to stack layers between us and the hazard and we want to follow through and maintain every layer.

We don't always feel right about asking our audience to share our posts - we aren't trying to make money here, we are trying to make people safer and smarter. Please consider sharing this with both the women in your circle and with the guys in your circle who are prone to mansplaining to the women in your circle! - Jim

On this May the fourth, we would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone about the four rules of lightsaber safety:
Rule I – Treat all lightsabers as if there is a kyber crystal located in the crystal chamber and a functioning diatium power cell in the base of the hilt.
Rule II – Always keep your lightsaber pointed in a safe direction. This is the primary rule of lightsaber safety. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.
Rule III – Always keep your finger off the activator until ready to engage. While holding a lightsaber, rest your finger alongside the activator until you are actually ready to extend the plasma blade.
Rule IV – Always be sure of what is in your immediate radius while using a lightsaber. Remember, a lightsaber can cut through virtually anything, from flesh to blast doors.
