We are a team of high school students, grades 9-12, that are competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition. FIRST robotics,“the varsity sport of the mind”, combines science and technology with the competition and the excitement of sports. In this event, students and mentors come together to build a robot, and attempt to reach the objective for that year’s competition, which this year happens to be a
basketball-themed game called Rebound Rumble. Our members have a wide variety of interests and skill levels, but our team is tight-knit, and a lot of fun to be around. We are currently working with a great group of talented volunteer mentors from Monsanto to build a working robot in time to compete in the St. Although winning is one of our goals, we also want to develop qualities that will lead us to success later in life. We’ve come together to build a robot, and along with that robot, lasting friendships, loyalty, enthusiasm, confidence, and team spirit, as well as other qualities that will improve our characters and give us an edge in everyday life. The FIRST Robotics competition is a great way to meet new people and learn new things. Very few of our members join with the knowledge needed to build a sophisticated machine, so we learn together, and take small steps towards our goals. FRC is also a chance to earn various awards, and even qualify for many college scholarships. When do we meet? We were given our kit and information at the FRC kickoff on January 7th at the St. Louis Science Center. Since then, we've been meeting in the LHWHS auto shop every weekday after school from 2:30 to 6:00 PM and even Saturdays from 9:00 AM until 5:30 or 6:00 PM. Our deadline to stop building the robot is February 21, and the St. Louis Regional competition at Chaifetz Arena is March 22-24.
