Thank you to everyone who played “Spot the Fossil” yesterday! 🔍 Are you ready for the reveal? Swipe to see the fossil and read more below!

ID: An ear bone that belongs to one of our 16 ft long predatory dolphins! These bones are called periotics, and house the cochlea, which aids the dolphin in directional stability (telling right side up vs. upside down). CT scans of the cochlea helps paleontologists understand the origins of echolocation in modern cetaceans (dolphins and whales). Even though this bone looks like a rock, the periotic is one of the most important bones to find from the entire skeleton. This one was found by Captain Ashby and is headed off to the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History for further study! 🐬

Can you identify this recent discovery from an Island Adventure with Captain Ashby? Write your guess below & then learn more about this find! ⬇️

ID: Eagle ray tooth battery from the skeleton of a ray that died and was immediately covered up with sediment to fossilize. Paired on the fossil is a snail steinkern where sediment filled in a shell and preserved the internal shape. Also, it’s so well preserved that you can still see the wear facet where the eagle ray chewed its prey during its final days in our oceans! Age: 30 million years old.

When you’re walking on the beach with a paleontologist, you never know what you’ll find! While shark teeth may get all the hype, one lucky client recently found this incisor from a white-tail deer that lived in Charleston during the Ice Age over 11,000 years ago! This piece sat in their apron as an unidentified “mystery fossil” until Captain Ashby sorted through everything they found. The benefit of our Adventures is having our guides classify your finds down to body part and animal species. The true value lies in knowing what you’ve found, and we always delight in sharing the exciting discoveries with every one of our clients! 🦌
