At the beginning of sparring rounds, I like to pair the newer guys with some of the more experienced guys. It helps them see that there are levels to this game and, hopefully, keeps pride and ego in check.
On the flip side, it’s good for the experienced guys too. It gives them an opportunity to practice self-control, discipline, and leadership. While most of them end up in the Philly shell 😂😂😂, I normally encourage them to work on the more advanced stuff such as positioning, angles, defense, punching between punches, and setting traps rather than relying on power.
What I love is that martial arts constantly reinforces two biblical principles that every believer needs in life: Humility and self-control.
📖The Bible warns us against pride: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
(James 4:6)And it teaches that true strength is found in restraint: “Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.” (Proverbs 16:32)
In the gym, just like in life, the goal isn’t to prove how tough you are. It’s to remain humble enough to learn and disciplined enough to control yourself when emotions want to take over, something important for every young person to know.
The truth is, we aren’t a fight gym. Self-defense and becoming a skilled fighter may or may not be a byproduct of what we do here, but we are ultimately in the business of building up family men for the Kingdom of God. 👑
Skill matters. Strength matters. But humility before God matters most. 💯💯💯
