Another season in the books for the red team. Things started and finished off extremely well this time around. First off the weather was perfect the whole weekend. Second, everyone showed up ready to play and guys were cool both days. The majority of the games were within 3 runs with the exception of the E vs D crossover round to finish up Saturday afternoon. Done in time to watch the Ducks stick it to USC and the Beavers win too was a great nightcap.
In the double elimination lower bracket Sunday morning, Still Here from Medford overcame a rough 0-3 Saturday to go undefeated on Sunday 15-12 over Mooseknuckle (4th place), 13-12 over Hoodlums (3rd place) and held on 6-5 in the finals over Family Affair comprised of family members from Washington and Salem. Still Here found a way to win the close games. Good job Ernie and the guys! In addition to a nice trophy, MVP mug and beanies, they will also be designing their own champions t-shirs my guy Robert at Elite Screenprinting in Salem will knock out for these guys so they can all match.
In the upper bracket, it was quite a day. The biggest difference in any game was 4 runs when Outlaws beat Hussey/Shelter to start the day (18-14). Jersey Lilly held off Holiday RV 12-10 to meet up with Outlaws and held on in that game 11-8 to make the finals. In the losers bracket, H***y was up on RV 15-2, then a huge inning and they found themselves down by about 6-7 runs. They fought back and took the lead in the top of the 7th 25-24 and held on in the bottom to win by a run. Hussey then took on the Outlaws and facing a one run deficit in the 7th inning, they gave up a 2 run shot and never got it going in the bottom of the inning to lose 12-9. This sent the Outlaws to the finals against Jersey Lilly. The home team Jersey Lilly battled hard and came up a play short to lose 13-12 in the finals.
The IF game was an unexpected classic 10 inning game. A game filled with great plays, clutch hits, and some missed opportunities by both teams. Billy and Fidel were locked in a pitching duel both backed by stud fielders defending some great hitters. Both teams scored exactly one run each in the last innings. Tied at 17, then 18, then 19 when Jersey Lilly scored one run in the 10th. After two slick fielding plays in the bottom of the 10th, the Outlaws were down to their last out. Then hit, walk, hit, hit and Fidel scores the winning run from second base with the throw to the plate just a bit late. Final score 20-19, with the last 3 games of the day being one run outcomes.
A tip of the cap to the other team and everyone left as friends. No serious injuries, and probably less than 20 hangovers. We found only one real 'tool' in the whole park and after he was tossed Saturday morning we never saw him again. And his team won the lower bracket championship. Pretty sure he won't be wearing the champions shirt like the rest of his 'teammates'. Now former teammates.
A big pat on the back to the men in red (Saturday) and black (Sunday). These guys may not always get it right, but they have the best uniforms in the game and at least look good almost all the time. Plus they had the long roadtrip from Salem to Medford and back, but it's all good. Thanks again for some enthralling softball and the good sportsmanship all weekend. And a big shout out to the weather gods after 2 weeks of rain here in the Cherry City (aka Salem).
We will start cranking things up Feb/March next year, so be prepared for a lot of upgrades that we will be undergoing during the off season.
We will also be taking this momentum from this weekend and season in general, as well as correcting some of our interal shortcomings to make the best softball in Oregon even better. Some of you guys out there will be playing a large or larger part in making 2013 an awesome season.
Thanks again to the players, umpires, directors, concessions, fans, city of Medford, Joes Sports Bar, Ducks/Beavers, weather gods, Baden softballs, Chevy van, Quality Trophy & Custom Stitch, Best Western Hotel, U.S. Cellular Park and USSSA for the great weekend.
No thanks to the gal in the drive thru at Wendy's that forgot our TWO fries, and gave us 9 pepper, and ZERO salt packets for the potato. Epic fail.
See you guys soon! Thanks again.
