I THINK I HAVE A CALL PROBLEM!!!!
While all diaphragm calls look similar, they are far from the same. They come in different tape material, latex style, latex thickness/ stretch, frame size, dome/bridge style, layers, etc. It is up to you as a hunter/caller to run through them and see what works best for your palate, calling style and skill level. There are many options out there to choose from and many brands that offer a multitude of calls. Do your due diligence as a sportsman/woman and practice. There is plenty of information to help along the way and courses you can take to improve your calling and elk knowledge. You owe it to the animals you pursue to be proficient with you weapon for a clean, quick and ethical kill, so why not decide you owe it to yourself to make the most of your time a field by sharpening every skill you can to create your own opportunities to get a shot. Go check out courses like or to gain elk calling and elk behavior knowledge. Go check out and try out all the different styles and get yourself setup for success

What can I say about this amazing week I spent in the mountains of Washington? It was legitimately one of the hardest physical endeavors I have put myself through but it was 150% worth every step, every foot of elevation gain/loss and every heavy pack lifted. We hiked in with about 65lbs on my back for 12 miles gaining 4500 feet in elevation. The hike in took us 8 hours, but the following morning showed me it was worth it when I unzipped the tent and saw my first day light view of our trip. BREATHTAKING!!!! The next few days saw us putting in 8-10 miles while gaining and losing 1300-1700 in elevation. The final hike out was the same 12 miles out and losing the original 4500 in elevation. But thanks to the awesome hunting community and the new friends we made on the mountain, my buck was packed down on a mule named Digger by an outstanding human named Vince who said he couldn’t live with himself if he watched me carry all that weight out knowing he could help and didn’t.
Sunday morning it all came together when we spotted a group feeding through the timber openings. We spotted my target and made a plan. and I headed out to cut them off while stayed back to keep eyes on them. We slipped through the timber and got in position when Sil saw the lead doe and small fork in the clearing. We set up my trekking poles using the system and then I started calming myself down. Sil got a range and I dialed my scope for 240 yards and waited. I saw my buck step out and I could hear Ron from .r.longrangeconcepts in my ear saying “fight for it”. I lined up my shot behind his shoulder and I heard “SEND IT”. I knew I hit him but I wasn’t sure how well, so we gave him a few minutes and eased up to check for sign. Turns out he was hit hard and Sil found him piled up within 15 yards of where he was standing. 1 shot behind the shoulder center punched the heart and exited out his off side hip. I am super stoked with this beautiful buck and can’t wait to see the euro mount all finished up. We spent that night sharing some fresh backstrap with our new friends knowing the meat was taken by my own hands. I love this life in the back country and I am so glad I got to spent it with awesome company.

Awesome weekend of hunting for the California A zone archery closer. 2 days on public land with trying to avoid heat exhaustion. We saw between 35-45 doe, yearlings and fawns in the past 2 days. We also saw one tiny spike. Not sure if we had a late fawn drop or a late rut last year, but most of the fawns we saw still had spots and looked to maybe be a month and a half old. No legal buck were around or at least none were seen, but with all these fawns it is obvious they are there somewhere!!!!
It was easy to pick out all these deer traveling from cover to cover with the help of my trekking pole tripod system. That thing is a game changer for glassing. Save the weight of carrying a tripod and use this setup with your trekking poles which most of us are already carrying. I am a huge fan of dual purpose gear.

Hey Drew, how is your hip? Well let’s find out!!! Feels fine for deadlifts I guess. Still feel the hip flexor tear a little when lifting my leg toward the front but I will just keep stretching, working my core, along with relaxing my psoas muscle and rolling out my piriformis muscle as well to unlock my hips.

Not my best form, but 4555lbs x 4 on my top set felt great.

And now to sit at the airport and wait for the rest of the LRII Delinquents to arrive!!!! This is going to be another awesome weekend with the .r.longrangeconcepts team and some other hooligans I have built awesome friendships with. Doesn’t get a whole lot better than spending the weekend with outstanding humans and sending some bombs out to distances I never even thought about trying before going through last years LRI course. Now we will enhance the skill set with the next step.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I for one am disgusted by the overly priced gear we all “need” for hunting and other outdoor adventures we choose to partake in. I was looking to possibly invest in a new light weight tent after having a conversation with some friends the other day about circumstances that could prevent me from using my hammock and tarp setup and I was so overwhelmed and under impressed looking at the cost of some of these items. In frustration I stopped looking and started thinking. What I came up with was that I still had this old Boy Scout style 2 pole A frame in the garage. I pulled it out and set it up in the back yard and realized this old thing works. It probably isn’t the most comfortable due to head space, but does it get me out of the elements? Probably better than most! Is it packable? Again probably better than most! Is it light weight? Very comparable to most especially since I can use my trekking poles in place of the poles that come with it!
I bring this up because I have been noticing more and more that the cost of items in the outdoor space are getting to an unreachable high for a lot of us budget minded outdoors men and women. This small piece of gear is a great example of something that works perfectly fine in place of something that in my opinion is completely overpriced. I completely disagree with the direction a lot of these companies are going with their price points and I understand it is their right, but it is also our right as the customer to spend our money wisely. $400 for hunting pants is absurd, $200 for a hoodie is ridiculous, $500 for a 1P tent is insanity, etc….

I need to give a huge shot out to

I had a mishap last month during elk season and ended up breaking my sight. The wing truss broke as well as the elevation bar and fiber cover.

Luckily I was able to run down to a nearby town and buy another sight (blavk gold rush 5pin) to get me back in the game to finish out my hunt.

I got back from Colorado and contacted their customer service department and they immediately told me, "send it back and we will take care of it." They have an unconditional warranty and they sent me a new sight. Not only did they replace it no questions asked, but they set the new sight up with my pin gaps and installed the sight tape. I installed it on my bow yesterday and it is dialed in like nothing ever happened.

Yeah that's perfect for archery deer season. You are reading that right 116° at 7pm. Let's just say heat exhaustion is a friendly reminder of how smart we are out here.

For the past 2 days we ate like fat kings in camp, I drank almost 6 gallons of water, laced a lot of it with electrolytes and then I stopped and grabbed food on the drive home and I still came home 4lbs lighter than when I left Friday.

Yesterday was nothing short of spectacular with creature movement. Critter count was 25-30 pigs, 9 coyote, 1 doe and 1 small forked horn buck. I decided a little to late to switch my focus from finding bucks to killing pigs and I let them slip through my fingers. That mistake won't be made next time after seeing the destruction they have caused in our hunting spot! It looks like bulldozers ran through the hills.

Oh well until the next outing.
