One day before 56.

And apparently 55 decided to go out swinging.

Today I squatted 195 for 8, then 195 for 10—both an AMRAP up to RPE 8.

Then I did hack squats, extra pulling volume, and finished with a 150-rep conditioning circuit because apparently my coach has lost his damn mind 🫠😂. Wyatt Christiansen M.S., B.S.

But I did it and feel better than before I started.

So I took this picture.

Because I want to remember this version of me.

Not because I’m trying to look younger.
Not because I’m pretending aging doesn’t happen.
And definitely not because I have everything figured out.

But because I am stronger than I was.

Stronger physically.
Stronger mentally.
More willing to take up space.
More willing to challenge myself.
More willing to listen to my body instead of constantly fighting it.

Tomorrow I turn 56.

And this is exactly why I believe so fiercely in strength training for women.

We don’t train to preserve who we were.
We train to build who we’re becoming.

If this is what getting older looks like, I’ll have seconds.

We only need 5 more people on our team to unlock another $5 registration refund for everyone to participate in the St. Charles Running Festival!🎉

And a reminder: you do NOT have to run! Walkers are absolutely welcome. ❤️

This event also benefits Hospice of the Chesapeake, making it especially meaningful to me. Having seen a close family member benefit from hospice care, this cause holds a special place in my heart.

Come walk with us! 💙 Event details are in the first comment below ⬇️.

I taught a deadlift today…without teaching a deadlift.

There wasn’t a barbell.

There wasn’t a lecture about “neutral spine.”

There wasn’t a list of cues to memorize.

Instead, we slowed everything down.

We explored a forward fold and halfway lift because the client regularly practices yoga. I started with what was familiar. Familiarity creates safety, and safety creates the opportunity to learn.

We softened the knees. We used a dowel for feedback. I asked questions instead of giving answers.

“Where do you feel the stick?”

“Where does it lose contact?”

“What can you do to reconnect with it?”

Little by little, they stopped trying to perform the movement and started feeling it.

Then something beautiful happened.

Without ever saying the words hinge or deadlift, they naturally transferred that movement to picking up a medicine ball. Then they connected it to lifting buckets in their barn.

That’s motor learning.

That’s ownership.

As coaches, it’s tempting to tell people what to do. But when we create the conditions for someone to discover a movement for themselves, they’re far more likely to own it—and use it outside the gym.

Strength isn’t something I give my clients.

It’s something I help them uncover.

Connect to your own strength.

“If it ain’t one thing, it’s another.” 👈🏼 This was a meme a friend posted with an addition: ‘I used to wonder what my parents meant by that when I was a kid. Now I know.’

And it is meant to be in jest. I get it. The clock is ticking and for some of us choosing our birthdate on online forms is like spinning the wheel of ‘where it stops nobody knows!’ Hahaha. FuNnY.

But do you ever notice how quickly your brain can write a story?

You wake up sore…
“I’m getting old.”

The scale is up…
“Nothing I do works.”

A workout feels hard…
“I’m so out of shape.”

One stressful day…
“Everything is falling apart.”

Here’s the thing:

Most of us aren’t reacting to reality.
We’re reacting to the story we’ve assigned to it.

Language matters.

The words you choose become the lens you look through.
The lens shapes your decisions.
Those decisions become habits.
And habits become identity.

What if instead of…

“It’s always something.”

…you asked,

“What’s actually true right now?”

Maybe it’s not doomsday.

Maybe it’s just Wednesday.

The stories you repeat become the person you become.

Choose them carefully.
