As we officially close Dare Strength (Formerly CrossFit Dare), I want to sincerely thank everyone who has trained with us and supported us throughout the past 12 years.

I hope all the reps completed, weights lifted, muscles gained, fat lost, elbows rubbed and fists bumped will leave an impact that’s greater than just fitness.

I wish you all continued strength, health and success in your lives and please don’t forget to thank your local trainers, coaches, gym owners and small business owners for their hard work.

When you get pregnant you maintain your muscle and strength best you can, with doctor’s approval

When you have to take care of a newborn, the strength and muscle you’ve built will have to pull you through the first couple months.

When you get sick..
The better chance you have at recovering quickly.

When you have a busy season of work, family duties, or other responsibilities…

In our last post, we shared how to address stress in the moment.

But there are things you can do to help prepare you to deal with stress ahead of time.

- Sleep - this is a big one (at least 6-7 hours, dark, quiet, cool room)

- Start your morning calmly (no phone or social media, no rushing, wake up a little early so you don’t panic and get your nervous system fired up)

- Drink plenty of water first thing in the morning (you’re likely dehydrated while you sleep)

- Exercise (your nervous system is more active during exercise but over time this helps your body and mind become more resilient to stressors)

- Whole Foods (our bodies like whole food because we can digest them properly and they have the nutrients our body needs)

- Have a plan for common triggers
- If you know certain situations, people or events trigger your stress either avoid them or change how you think about them.

- Journalling, meditation, stretching, exercise
- if you have the time for any of these, do them

Learning to adapt to stress is a skill and you have control over how you react to stressful events.

There’s strong scientific proof that links chronic stress with physical illnesses like:
- Heart disease
- Weakened immune function
- Digestive problems
- Speed metastasis of cancer
- Diabetes
- Triggering asthma attacks

Here are some steps to reduce stress in the moment

Reduce stress in the moment

Take a walk in nature or outside
- Remove yourself from the stressful situation, if possible, and take a walk
- Even 5-10 minutes can help reduce stress hormones and release feel good hormones in your brain
- Avoid watching or listening to anything other than peaceful music or nature sounds

Exercise
- It can be a quick 5-10 minutes of 10-20 squats, pushups, sit ups, lunges, and pull-ups
- It doesn’t have to be a “perfect” program
- You’re doing just enough to get similar benefits like walking

Breathing exercise like box breathing 4-4-4-4
- Sit in a comfortable position with minimal sounds and interruptions
- Take a deep breath in for 4 seconds (filling your chest and belly as much as you can)
- Holding your breathe for 4 seconds (shorter if it feels too hard)
- Breath out all of the air for 4 seconds
- Hold your breathe for 4 seconds
- Then repeat this 10-20 times

Journaling or Venting
- Write, type out or talk into a voice recording app everything that’s on your mind
- You can erase or burn it after but getting these thoughts out of your head can help alleviate some stress
- Write down everything you’re feeling, thinking, trying to solve, your problems, etc…
- Be careful not to get stuck in self shaming or blaming talk

These are also healthier alternatives to stress or emotional eating.

Though, if your blood sugar is part of your stress/irritability/hanger… you can have a quick snack or schedule your meals better

If the benefits of exercise could be put into a pill, it would be the most prescribed medicine by doctors and it would be the most successful drug on the market.

- Strengthen heart and blood vessels
- Improve oxygen glow
- Lower and manage blood pressure
- Lower cholesterol
- Reduce risk of heart disease, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and certain cancers
- Reverse (and slow down ) aging
- Help regulate your nervous system
- Improve digestion
- Improve focus, cognitive function
- Better mood and regulating emotions
That’s just some of the benefits

Today we’re talking about cardio.

Cardio doesn’t only mean running
But running is a valuable skill to build and maintain
You don’t need much equipment, you can do it anywhere, and it’ll help you run away from that tiger

Take your pick
- Walking outside or the treadmill
- Stationary bike or elliptical machine
- Road bike
- Jogging and running
- Rower machine, ski erg

START HERE:
1. Steady pace
- Continuous lower intensity pace you can maintain for 20-30 minutes
- Do that 2-3 times per week
- In 1-3 weeks Increase the time by 5-10 minutes
2. Intervals
- Start adding some intensity with intervals
- 1 minute at a faster pace then 2-3 minutes at a slower manageable pace
- Continue for 20-30 minutes

Do more of the steady pace and sprinkle in some intervals as you get fitter.

Combine this with some strength training and you’re setting your body up for a fit future.

Supplements do not replace a balanced diet.
Most healthy bodies can benefit from moderate sun exposure.

But many people are indoors during the day and do not eat a balanced diet.

So while you work through the details of getting more sun and adjusting your diet..

Supplements can be helpful.
No they are not a waste of money.
Unless spending money for your health, longevity and better performing body is not a priority.
