Perhaps one of the most remarkable bits of Whittier Christian Football lore...2-time CIF Champion and CiF Player of the Year Mark Ortega also was crowned the Supreme American Gladiator after an incredible win in the final on national television. American Gladiators was one of the most popular shows of the decade.

Ortega, a former Whittier Christian student-athlete and chiropractic student from Fullerton, secured his title in 1992 in what is widely considered the most iconic moment in the history of the original show. During the final event, "The Eliminator," he overcame a 4-second head start by runner-up Joseph "Bam Bam" Mauro to win in a dramatic, 0.02-second photo finish. He also earned a brand-new Chevrolet automobile of his choice, which was part of the Grand Champion prize package during the first two seasons.

Bam Bam probably should have watched some game tape before taking Ortega on! šŸˆ

In 1990, the Heralds pulled off something that made that season one of the most memorable in school history. To win league and make a run to the CIF Finals, Whittier Christian had to beat league rival Valley Christian twice in the same season. Anybody around Herald football understands how big that was. Rivalry games are hard enough once. Doing it twice, with everything on the line both times, was huge! The rivalry with is a storied one, and is built on mutual respect in competition as brothers in Christ. šŸˆ

The first matchup became an instant classic as the Heralds battled back from a huge second half deficit to keep their championship hopes alive. Then, with a trip to the CIF Finals on the line, they had to face Valley all over again and answered the bell one more time. That second win punched their ticket to the CIF Championship Game and helped define one of the greatest runs in program history.

The 1990 Heralds finished undefeated, won the CIF Championship and brought home a State Championship, leaving behind a standard of grit, resilience and championship football that still echoes through Whittier Christian today. Go Heralds!Ā šŸŸ„šŸŸØā¬œļø

We are humbled and grateful to share the story of the Coach Timothy Redmond Fund at Whittier Christian High School. This fund was founded to honor Coach Timā€™s decades of faithful service and his deep impact on our community, serving students and families with heart and compassion. The purpose of the Timothy Redmond Fund is to demonstrate Godā€™s love in tangible ways and to walk alongside WCHS students and families through lifeā€™s challenges, reminding them that they are not alone.
